The Jupiter Society's song, "The Enemy," tells the story of a small crew on a small vessel that has been far from home for 12 days. One member of the crew has been staring out into space for more than 24 hours and has noticed something that the others have not. Despite the fact that there is nothing more than silence out there, he senses that there is something hiding, something never heard of, feared, seen, or sensed before. The instruments on the vessel are silent, and the crew members are disturbed: is this the first contact or last warning?
The song goes on to describe secondary indications without communication, a hidden weapon, and a possible detonation, and warns that one must die. There is no truce, no forgiveness, no guilt, and no remorse. The crew is afraid of the enemy, and one of them will die. The lyrics paint a tense picture of a crew on the brink of discovering something unknown, yet also possibly dangerous. There is a sense of both anticipation and dread, and the possibility of dire consequences.
