The Enemy
Jupiter Society Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A small crew, a small vessel, far away from home for 12 days. He has been staring out into the dark for over 24 hours, listening intensively to the receivers, and seems to notice something the others do not. Small pearls of sweat form on his upper lip. The young skipper knows he is right, the others hope he is. The silent instruments disturb their thoughts.
First contact or last warning?

Inside us or outside there is something hiding
Never heard of, feared, seen or sensed before

Nothing more than silence out there, someone's watching
Nothing there but empty, dead, cold space

Secondary indications without communication
Hidden weapon, detonation hear this warning

Cannot see, cannot hear, one must die

No truce, no forgiveness ah ah ah ah ah
No guilt, no remorse ah ah ah ah ah

Run from' the enemy
Hide from' the enemy
Scared of' the enemy
One of us will die

Run for' the enemy
Hunting' the enemy

Fighting' the enemy
One of us will die

Overall Meaning

The Jupiter Society's song, "The Enemy," tells the story of a small crew on a small vessel that has been far from home for 12 days. One member of the crew has been staring out into space for more than 24 hours and has noticed something that the others have not. Despite the fact that there is nothing more than silence out there, he senses that there is something hiding, something never heard of, feared, seen, or sensed before. The instruments on the vessel are silent, and the crew members are disturbed: is this the first contact or last warning?

The song goes on to describe secondary indications without communication, a hidden weapon, and a possible detonation, and warns that one must die. There is no truce, no forgiveness, no guilt, and no remorse. The crew is afraid of the enemy, and one of them will die. The lyrics paint a tense picture of a crew on the brink of discovering something unknown, yet also possibly dangerous. There is a sense of both anticipation and dread, and the possibility of dire consequences.

Overall, "The Enemy" reflects on the fear of the unknown, the dangers of exploration, and the possibility of conflict that exists when humans venture into uncharted territory. The lyrics reflect on what we stand to lose when we take risks, highlighting the importance of cautious exploration and diplomacy when encountering new frontiers.
