Born and raised in Tennessee, as a child he appeared on the television shows Star Search and The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. In the late 1990s, Timberlake rose to prominence as one of the two lead vocalists and youngest member of NSYNC, which eventually became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. Timberlake won two Grammy Awards for his R&B-focused debut solo album Justified (2002) and its single "Cry Me a River". Another single from the album, "Rock Your Body", was also successful.
His critically acclaimed second album FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006), characterized by its diversity in music genres, debuted atop the U.S. Billboard 200 and spawned the Hot 100 consecutive number-one singles with "SexyBack", "My Love" and "What Goes Around... Comes Around". Established as a solo artist worldwide, his first two albums both exceeded sales of 10 million copies, as he continued producing records and collaborating with other artists.
From 2008 through 2012, Timberlake focused on his acting career, effectively putting his music career on hiatus. He held starring roles in the films The Social Network, Bad Teacher, Friends with Benefits, and In Time.
Timberlake resumed his music career in 2013 with his third and fourth albums The 20/20 Experience and The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2, exploring neo soul styles, partly inspired by the expansive song structures of 1960s and 1970s rock. The former became the best-selling album of the year and spawned the top three singles "Suit & Tie" and "Mirrors". Timberlake voiced Branch in DreamWorks Animation's Trolls (2016), whose soundtrack includes his fifth Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping single, "Can't Stop the Feeling!", which earned him an Academy Award nomination. His fifth studio album Man of the Woods (2018) became his fourth number-one album in the US. Supported by the two top ten singles, "Filthy" and "Say Something", it concluded 2018 as the sixth best-selling album of the year.

Drown
Surface
Should've known your love was nothin' but the surface
I'm in the deep end, I can't fight the current
Tryin' to keep my head above it
And I've been tryna be your wave, your wave
But it's about to break 'cause
You showed me exactly who you are and I should've believed it (believed it)
You left me alone out in the dark with all of your demons (demons)
Got caught up in the tide of all the tears you've cried
Yeah, you know I was blinded by my heart, sinking from the start
Should've never followed you this far, now I'm in the deep end
And you let me drown
You didn't even try to save me
Heard about heartbreak with the moonlight
And now the pain just magnifies
I know exactly what it feels like
Yeah, you do it to me every time
And if real love never dies
Why am I barely breathin'?
Here on my own
Out in the deep end
Way down below
Way down below of all of your lies
And you keep beggin' me to stay, to stay (stay)
I'm out here tryna be your wave, your wave
But it's about to break 'cause
You showed me exactly who you are and I should've believed it (should've believed it)
You left me alone out in the dark with all of your demons
Got caught up in the tide of all the tears you've cried
Yeah, you know I was blinded by my heart, sinking from the start
Should've never followed you this far, now I'm in the deep end
And you let me drown
You didn't even try to save me
You let me drown
You didn't even try to save me
But sometimes (sometimes I)
Sometimes I sit and fantasize (fantasize)
Maybe sometime in another life (another life)
We could've got it right, got it right (got it right)
Ooh, yeah (maybe)
Maybe sometimes in another life (another life)
I'll see your face in a new light (new light)
And your eyes say, "I love you"
You've been beggin' me to stay, to stay
And I've been tryna be your wave, your wave
You let me drown
You didn't even try to save me
You let me drown
You didn't even try to save me
You let me drown
You didn't even try to save me
You let me drown
You didn't even try to save me
It's about to break, break
It's about to break
It's about to break (break, break, break, break)
Break, break
It's about to break
(Drown, drown)
(Drown, drown)
In the song "Drown" by Justin Timberlake, the lyrics convey a theme of realizing the superficiality of a relationship and feeling overwhelmed by betrayal and heartbreak. The repeated imagery of drowning symbolizes the feeling of being consumed by emotional turmoil and being unable to escape the pain and struggles within the relationship.
The singer reflects on how they should have seen through the surface level of their partner's love. Despite trying to stay afloat and maintain a facade of being okay, the weight of the betrayal and deceit becomes too much to bear. The pleading and begging from the partner to stay juxtaposed with the singer trying to be their "wave" reflects a futile attempt to salvage a sinking relationship.
The lyrics touch on themes of self-realization and betrayal, as the singer acknowledges being blinded by love and now facing the consequences of following their partner too far. The idea of being left alone in the dark with their partner's demons emphasizes the loneliness and isolation of being in a toxic relationship where the other person does not try to save them from drowning in their emotions.
The reference to heartbreak in the moonlight and the pain magnifying illustrates the intensity of the emotional turmoil experienced. Despite the hope for a different outcome in another life and the desire to see love in a new light, the recognition that the current situation is irreparable prevails. The repeated pleas for the partner to save them, juxtaposed with the acknowledgment that they didn't even try, further emphasize the sense of abandonment and betrayal felt by the singer.
In the end, the impending break represents the final unraveling of the relationship, with the emotional weight becoming too much to bear. The repetition of the word "break" and the finality of the imagery of drowning reinforce the sense of being overwhelmed and consumed by the turmoil of the failed relationship. The song ultimately captures the raw emotions of heartbreak, betrayal, and the realization that sometimes, despite our efforts, we cannot save ourselves from drowning in a toxic love.
