1) Rising from the beautiful beaches and warm tropical atmosphere of the Hawaiian Islands, comes a young, poised, local recording artist with national appeal, potential, and aspirations. Justin Kawika Young is a gifted singer/song writer who, at this young age, has already experienced success in the Hawaiian music scene. After winning first place in a song writing contest in 1995, Justin was given the opportunity to record a local album. Working on the project, Justin gained experience and knowledge in all aspects of the recording process. Showing his versatility as a musician, Justin played keyboards, guitar, and ukulele, and wrote six of the ten songs on the record.
In March, 1996, Justin's debut album released at number three at Tower Records for Hawaiian albums and remained in the top ten for six weeks. Three of Justin's original songs were released, and each spent several weeks as one of the five most requested songs of the day on local radio stations. While promoting his album, Justin performed throughout the Islands. Most notable, was a performance at the Waikiki Shell in front of thousands while opening for the national Reggae group, Big Mountain. Justin has established a reputation in the Islands for his good music and gentle character.
In September of 1997, Justin released his much anticipated sophomore album "Soothe You". The album produced four number one radio hits across the Island chain. At the end of the year Justin was picked by one radio station as the number one new artist of 1997. He also received three Hawaiian Music Award including: "Best Performance By A Rhythm & Blues Artist", "New Artist of the Year", and Honorable Recognition for his version of the classic song "Crazy Love". In July of ‘98, Justin was selected by Brian McKnight to be one of two local opening acts for his Hawai`i concert.
Justin's third album, "My Eyes Adore You", shows his continued growth as a vocalist and songwriter. Many original songs appear on the album including a beautiful acoustic ballad called "Was It Loneliness", and a Hawaiian falsetto song inspired by his home called "E Kailua E". Justin also brings a fresh vibe to John Denver's "Leaving On A Jet Plane", new lyrics to Frankie Vallie's classic "My Eyes Adore You", and a smooth R&B flow to the Bee Gees' and Hui Ohana's "Come On Over". Another highlight is an acoustic reggae collaboration with local recording group Pure Heart.
Justin's success in Hawaii has not lessened his desire to reach his ultimate goal. Justin's dream is to have the opportunity to share his unique, soothing music on a national level. His musical inspirations include: Stevie Wonder, Boyz II Men, Babyface, Brian McKnight. Justin also holds great admiration for the artistry and lyricism of Sarah McLachlan, Jewel and Fiona Apple. These influences combine with Justin's own expressions to create a distinct style. Shades of the laid-back lifestyle of the islands can be sensed in his mellow, relaxing, and soulful songs that combine old and new sounds.
Outside of music, Justin is a well rounded individual. As a senior in high school, Justin managed to maintain a 4.00 grade point average while recording his first album. He also received a scholarship from the Hawai`i Academy of Recording Arts which allowed him to take classes at the University of Hawai`i. Justin also enjoys athletic activities and recently completed the Tin Man Triathlon. Justin is raised by his single mother and he hopes to take some of her financial burden soon through music.
2) Justin James Hayward-Young is a British artist who recorded as Jay Jay Pistolet and is now with The Vaccines.
Speak The Same
Justin Young Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And i'll stay
I've done my share, i've done my share
Of the chase
I'm tired of trying, justifying
Me to you, you to them and do it all over again
So walk away and i'll stay
It'd be nice if tonight
But instead you will color the light
And take away
Something never left for you
CHORUS
We can speak the same language
And keep on explaining
But if you don't hear what i hear
Then any words that i'm using
Will still be confusing
If you don't care enough to meet me there
We'll fold the page to hold the place
But it won't stay
Cause time does more than distance does
To separate
I'm tired of believing every time i'm leaving
That it's up to me, never up to you
So walk away and i'll stay
It'd be nice if tonight
When i take you by face value
You might reflect the light
And give to me what i give to you
CHORUS
It'd be nice if tonight
You took me by face value
But instead you will color the light
And take away
Something never left for you
CHORUS
In "Speak The Same," Justin Young seems to be expressing frustration with ineffective communication and the feeling of being constantly misunderstood in a relationship. He addresses the other person directly, telling them to "just walk away" and leave him be, as he has already "done his share" of chasing after them. He's tired of the constant back and forth, the justifying of oneself, only to have to do it all over again.
The chorus provides the main message of the song - the idea that without truly hearing and understanding each other, communication is useless. He likens it to "speaking the same language" but without actually "meeting" in the middle. In the end, he recognizes that time and distance will only serve to further separate them, so it's better to cut ties now.
Overall, the song seems to be about the difficult realization that sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we just can't seem to get through to someone else. It's a universal feeling, and one that's sure to resonate with many listeners.
Line by Line Meaning
Walk away, just walk away
Leave me, I won't stop you
And i'll stay
I'll be here, feeling hurt and alone
I've done my share, i've done my share
I've tried my best, given my all
Of the chase
To pursue a relationship that feels one-sided
I'm tired of trying, justifying
I'm exhausted from explaining myself to you and others
Me to you, you to them and do it all over again
I'm tired of repeating the same conversations and feeling unheard
So walk away and i'll stay
Leave if you need to, I'll still be here
It'd be nice if tonight
I wish that this one time
You took me by face value
You accepted me for who I am without judgment
But instead you will color the light
You'll twist and distort the truth to fit your own narrative
And take away
Rob me of
Something never left for you
The love and connection that was never your right to take
CHORUS
I wish we could understand each other
We can speak the same language
We may use the same words, but the meaning is lost
And keep on explaining
We'll keep trying to make each other understand
But if you don't hear what i hear
If you're not truly listening to me
Then any words that i'm using
My words will be meaningless
Will still be confusing
We'll still be lost in translation
If you don't care enough to meet me there
If you're not willing to make an effort to understand me
We'll fold the page to hold the place
We'll hold onto the memory of each other
But it won't stay
But memories fade over time
Cause time does more than distance does
Time can erode even the strongest of bonds
To separate
To break us apart
I'm tired of believing every time i'm leaving
I'm tired of hoping that things will change when I walk away
That it's up to me, never up to you
I'm tired of feeling like the only one who cares
It'd be nice if tonight
I wish that this one time
When i take you by face value
When I see you for who you are without judgment
You might reflect the light
You might understand and appreciate what I have to offer
And give to me what i give to you
And reciprocate the love and connection I'm offering
