Könsförrädare have conquered many Swedish hearts with a both loud and melodically warm guitar rock. The friends from Sweden dare to grapple with subjects such as gender and norms as well as right and wrong in these politically paralysed days.
Their debut album “Curse All Law” is produced by swedish indie icon Mattias Alkberg and was praised as one of the most promising new records of the year in Sweden. The buzz around the band resulted in a lot of live shows including concerts at major nordic festivals such as Way Out West, Roskilde Festival and by:larm, and as opening act for Glasvegas. Their first single “Raging River” got a lot of radioplay on Swedish national radio. And finally – as the band’s definite break through – Könsförrädare got a Swedish nomination to the prestigious Nordic Music Prize.
Könsförrädare plays with a punk approach that will probably remind listeners with large record collections of Sleater-Kinney and Sonic Youth. But the young band doesn’t need quick comparisons – they hold their own, and their songs speak to both the musical heart and the political commitment.
Coming from a small town in the northernmost part of Sweden Könsförrädare spent their youth playing together and came up with their sound – kind and violent with a dreamy twist. Their politically conscious and stylisticially refined lyrics makes it hard to separate pop from politics.
Könsförrädare is also a riddle, even in Swedish. Roughly translated it means ”gender betrayers”, and refers to a recent controversy in Sweden when a famous feminist politician said that women who sleep with men betray their gender. The band picked up the word Könsförrädare giving it a broadened, positive and sophisticated meaning – instead of using it as a demeaning word it is a transformational and creative possibility.
Könsförrädare is like the volcano Eyjafjallajökull. Impossible to pronounce but something you cannot miss out on.

Death to stories

Forget to mention your name
Neither ever carries anything you can afford
Peel the sticker off the place where you stay
Death to stories death to songs
Death to stories death to songs
Make plans to sleep in shirtless
After seven days
Leave emptied
Death to stories death to songs
Death to stories death to songs
Death to stories death to songs
Death to stories death to songs
Write yourself a gun
Noise makes too much sound
Deconstruct disassembled weeks
Your weak knees and needs
Death to stories death to songs
Death to stories death to songs
Death to stories death to songs
Death to stories death to songs
To see someone to see someone
To see someone then run
To see someone to see someone
To see someone then run
The lyrics to Könsförrädare's "Death to Stories" are a fragmented and cryptic commentary on the nature of storytelling itself. The opening line, "Abandon opening letters, forget to mention your name," suggests a desire to remain anonymous and avoid the act of self-disclosure that can often accompany storytelling. The references to "stories" and "songs" being killed off throughout the song further emphasize this theme, as if the singer is railing against the very idea of narrative itself.
The line "Peel the sticker off the place where you stay" can be interpreted in many ways, but it could be seen as a metaphor for the destruction of the idea of home or place, another essential element of narrative. The mention of "sleep[ing] in shirtless after seven days" could be a nod to the idea of living a minimalist, nomadic lifestyle without the need for material possessions or attachments.
As the song progresses, the imagery becomes increasingly violent and surreal. "Write yourself a gun" could be interpreted as creating one's own weapon to defend oneself against the tyranny of storytelling and the power of narrative. The line "noise makes too much sound" is a paradoxical statement that suggests a desire for silence in a world that is always full of noise and meaningless chatter.
Ultimately, the repeated lines "to see someone then run" suggest a fear of intimacy and a desire to remain disconnected from others, even if it means sacrificing the comfort of storytelling and shared experience.
