Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

It doesn't really match your hair
Did I ever tell you that your breath is worse
Than what you wear
That's exactly what she told him
At least that's what he told me
So I guess we could conclude
Love's not what you see between the legs of the majority
That's a lovely dress you're wearing
Too bad your figure can't make it work
When I hear the things you say
I wonder if your brain can work
That's exactly what he told her
At least that's what she told me
I scream my calls, I lock my doors
I'm suddenly filled with apathy
Love's not what you see between the legs of the majority
Although, I'd like to add the game in bed is a necessity
To make me happy
Make me happy
Love's not what you see between the legs of the majority
Although, I'd like to add the game in bed is a necessity
K's Choice's song "Me Happy" is a scathing critique of society's obsession with physical appearance and sexual prowess, told through the lens of two unhappy individuals in a failing relationship. The song starts off with one person mocking the other's hat and bad breath, before revealing that the insults were actually said by the other partner. The two individuals are clearly not happy together, with the second verse continuing in the same fashion, this time with one partner criticizing the other's dress and intelligence. The chorus then serves as a contrast to the rest of the song, as it juxtaposes the idea that love is not simply physical with a confession that sex is still important for happiness.
The lyrics of "Me Happy" are a powerful commentary on the shallow and often harmful expectations placed on individuals in modern society. The opening lines are particularly biting, as the singer attacks the other's physical appearance and hygiene. However, the revelation that the insults were actually spoken by the other partner highlights the toxic nature of their relationship. The song then goes on to explore how the idea of physical beauty and sexual prowess can mask deeper issues, such as lack of emotional connection and respect. The chorus brings the song full circle, acknowledging that while love is more than just a physical connection, sex can still play an important role in happiness.
Overall, "Me Happy" is a searing critique of society's obsession with physical appearance and sexual prowess, delivered through a poignant and painfully relatable narrative of two unhappy partners. The song's lyrics are a powerful reminder of the importance of authenticity and emotional connection in relationships, while also acknowledging the role that physical intimacy can play in achieving happiness.
