Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

Now Is Mine
K's Choice Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Perhaps collapse to make me seize
A moment
Just a breeze
Grateful, humble I allow
These words to be the past somehow
I wonder
Am I here now
I feel hear see and it confuses me
I'm wrong
I am here now
Is mine I'll take it
All around the world
Take my future past, it's fine
But now is mine
My precious present will you bloom
To make this fourth dimension womb
Stop asking
Stop asking why
All I know is all I am
Will never fully understand my breathing
I try
How I try to feel hear see and it confuses me
I'm wrong
I am here now
Is mine I'll take it
All around the world
Take my future past, it's fine
But now is mine
The lyrics to K's Choice's song "Now Is Mine" capture the feeling of living in the present moment and being grateful for what you have. The opening line, "My past, my future, my disease," suggests that these elements of life can weigh us down and hold us back. However, the next line, "Perhaps collapse to make me seize," implies that sometimes these things can come crashing down and enable us to seize the moment. The singer then reflects on being grateful and humble, allowing the past to be just that - in the past. They question their existence in the present moment, wondering if they are really here and now.
The chorus emphasizes the confusion and impossibility of truly comprehending the present moment. The line "I feel hear see and it confuses me" captures this sentiment perfectly. Despite this confusion, the singer asserts their presence in the moment, declaring that "now is mine." They acknowledge that the past and the future are not theirs to control, but the present moment is something they can take ownership of.
The final verse continues this theme, with the singer acknowledging that they may never fully understand their own existence. However, they try their best to live in the present moment, feeling, hearing, and seeing all that is around them. The song ends with a declaration that "now is mine," a powerful reminder to seize the moment and appreciate the present.
