This group has, in their own opinion, created a new genre of german rap, calling it “a mix of punk and techno”. It’s primarily battle rap with funny punchlines, usually filled with lots of irony and black humor. The group is composed of the rappers Tarek, Maxim, Nico (known before as €8000) and the DJ Craft.

The meaning of their acronymous name differs from source to source. The one that is is currently favored is “Kannibalen in Zivil”(plaincloths cannibals). Other include “Künstler im Zuchthaus”(artists in the penitentiary), stated in earlier songs, and "Kriegsverbrecher in Zwangsjacken" (warcriminals in straight jackets).

They released their first album “DasRapDeutschlandKettensägenMassaker” in 2005 via Royalbunker, a known oldschool underground rap label based in Berlin, credited to have brought Battle rap in germany to a wider audience. One year later the Mixtape “Böhse Enkelz” was released, followed by the new album “Hahnenkampf” in August 2007, both of which were released through Royalbunker as well. In July 2009 they released their fourth album "Sexismus gegen Rechts".

Overall Meaning

The song "Babylon" by K.I.Z. is a critique on modern society and its vices. The song starts with the lines, "We decorate you with gold and hang the most beautiful diamonds around your neck, everything new about you. Only the hate towards you is old, and now I understand that you wanted it that way." Here the band is talking about the allure of material possessions in society, and how people are willing to do anything to attain them, even if it means manipulating and exploiting others. The lyrics "you breed the deadliest snakes in your garden" can also be interpreted symbolically, referring to the powerful elites who manipulate the masses and turn them against each other.

The song becomes increasingly political in the following verses, attacking the powerful few who rule over the masses. The lyrics, "You lead so many people into the abyss from your head. Everyone is still praying to God, but this city is not his job. Never gave him much except when he's miserable. She has both hands full of blood, but no one sees her, damn naivety," speak directly to the corruption of power, and how the powerful few use their wealth and influence to control and harm others. Further on, the band speaks about how society turns against each other, and how it feeds on itself. "So many sons and daughters who she never sees. But we are like poison for each other, made for it. My Babylon. You've taken my brother from me. My Babylon. Only you send the wonders away."

The song also speaks about the manipulation and exploitation of the working class. The lyrics, "You attract moths with your lights to feed the rats with them. I do not hate you but only look at you soberly. Man, I know you too well, your four million faces," attacks the power of the ruling few to manipulate and control those beneath them. The song ends with the demanding lyrics, "My Babylon. You have taken my brother from me. My Babylon. Only you send the wonders away." This song is a critique on modern society and how it is organized, and how the powerful few manipulate and exploit the masses.
