Children
K. ReAvEr Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sitting alone on a cold metal bench
In a metal cage
Even if you knew what day it was
It wouldn't matter
Staring into the black hole where your mother was
Trying to remember your father's face
An unwilling and unnecessary orphan
We keep breaking them for some reason
All we get are broken children

You came with hope
And they tore your heart out
You leave in fear and silence
Surrounded by all that violence
You came to accept the promise of America

We keep breaking them for some reason
All we get are broken children

Well live is better
Than where you've been
If you've got the right color skin
And your papers are in order
When you cross the border
But you came too late
Now they've slammed the gate

We keep breaking them for some reason
All we get are broken children

Still sitting alone on a cold metal bench
In a metal cage
Even if you knew what day it was
It wouldn't matter
Staring into the black hole where your mother was
Trying to remember your father's face
An unwilling and unnecessary orphan

We keep breaking them for some reason
All we get are broken children

Overall Meaning

In K. ReAvEr's song "Children," the lyrics describe the inhumane treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers, particularly children, at the US-Mexico border. The first stanza depicts a child sitting alone in a metal cage, trying to remember their parents' faces but feeling like an "unwilling and unnecessary orphan." The repeated line "we keep breaking them for some reason, all we get are broken children" highlights the theme of children being traumatically affected by the violent and unjust experiences they face. The second stanza describes how immigrants and asylum seekers come to the US with hope, yet often leave in fear and silence due to the brutal conditions they encounter, surrounded by violence. The third stanza emphasizes the inequality and discrimination they face based on their skin color and immigration status. The song ends with the child still sitting alone in a metal cage, highlighting the unjust and inhumane treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers.

Overall, "Children" is a powerful commentary on the dehumanizing treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers, particularly children, at the US-Mexico border. The imagery of the metal cage conveys a sense of imprisonment and brutality, while the repeated line emphasizes the human cost of such treatment. The song is a call to action, urging listeners to stand up against such injustice and advocate for the rights of those who are too often marginalized and mistreated.

This was the last tune I played with my best friend before he moved out of my town. We knew eachother for 11 years and he never said farewell, we always say " towards the future as long as we both live, we shall encounter eachother one or more time and will meet again." We did a handshake and we parted ways, watching his car go.

I listen to this as an anniversary of our friendship. As for the last time, it became a tune that I will remember even through deletion from YouTube, I'll still remember. Hands down one of the most beautiful tunes I have ever listened to.
