After a short spell working as a model, 5'10" Kelis began appearing on songs by Neptunes produced rappers such as 'Got Your Money' by the late rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard. Soon afterwards, she released her debut album, Kaleidoscope in 1999 of which the first single was 'Caught Out There,' a song based on the time she caught her boyfriend cheating on her, and she beat him. The video feautures Kelis leading a pack of angry women down the street screaming 'I hate you so much right now!'. The album was released in USA, Europe and Asia, but did not find much audience in the USA. Not a great success, it only sold 249,000 copies to date.
After finding her largest audience in Europe, Kelis released her second album titled Wanderland (2001) in Europe only, which like her first album did not fare well. It only sold 80,000 copies and was entirely produced by The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) again, similarly to her debut. Only one single was released 'Young Fresh N New'.
In 2003 Kelis finally found fame in her country with the single 'Milkshake,' which was a massive success in Europe, Asia and USA, and she began dating rapper Nas (born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones). The single was from the album 'Tasty' which did not feature the Neptunes as heavily as her previous albums. Singles included the popular Dallas Austin produced 'Trick Me' and 'Millionaire', a collaboration with OutKast's Andre 3000. 'In Public's duet with Nas was the fourth single from the album, becoming a top twenty hit in the U.K. without a video.
In 2006, Kelis presented a new album to her fans, entitled Kelis Was Here, which was originally to be called 'The Puppeteer' which was released on 22 August but was due Fall 2005. No Neptunes tracks appeared on this album, but Kelis used other producers such as Max Martin, Will.I.Am (Black Eyed Peas) and Raphael Saadiq. Singles are the huge 'Bossy', 'Blindfold Me', and 'Lil Star'. Kelis wrote more of the material on this album than she did for Tasty, and carries off the sci-fi, electronica sounds so often considered Neptunes material without them. This is most evident on the brilliant 'Trilogy'. Kelis has said she wants to make her mark with this album, as it will be the last 'album like this' she will make.
In October 2007, Kelis was dumped by Jive Records, for poor sales of Kelis Was Here but a new album is in the pipeline. The Hits - a greatest hits collection - was released in March 2008, including tracks where she was a featured artist, eg, Got Your Money by Ol' Dirty Bastard , N.E.R.D's Truth or Dare, and Richard X's Finest Dreams.
Kelis then signed to Interscope Records, and released her fifth studio album entitled Flesh Tone in May 2010. The David Guetta-produced Acapella preceded the LP in February of that year. Other singles released from the album include '4th of July (Fireworks)', 'Scream' and 'Brave'. The following year, Kelis appeared on Calvin Harris' 'Bounce'.
In the beginning of 2010, Kelis received a letter by animal rights organization PETA, in which she was informed about the cruelty that comes along with the production of fur coats. She pointed out that the organization seems to have little concern about the treatment of people of color and that she will continue wearing fur and eating meat.
Songfacts reported that 'Distance', the planned first single from Kelis’ sixth studio album received its first play during the June 30, 2012 show of The Beatnik Mix on London's Reprezent 107.3FM. At the time, the album was set to be house/dance-inspired, but sessions with TV on The Radio's Dave Sitek led to it taking a soul-like direction.
Kelis completed her sixth album in April 2013, and her new label Ninja Tune confirmed details regarding the album in January the following year, 'Jerk Ribs' served as the lead single for the album; the track had however been previously released as a free download the previous year.
Food was released in April 2014 to critical acclaim. Kelis also appeared for the first time at the annual South by Southwest festival, both performing and serving meals to attendees from her food truck.
Not Going Back
KELIS Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
What nigga! What bitch-ass niggaz!
What! Babe, babe, start the car!
[Kelis]
Nasir, come on let's go! Get in the car now, let's go! Throw it out, let's go!
[Nas]
But I got 'em. But I got 'em, though.
[Kelis]
This is crazy, why didn't you just throw it out of the car?
This is so stupid, what are you doing? Why are we even out here?
Why are we out here? What's going on? This is retarded, yo we gotta
This is crazy. Never again. You'd throw everything away, for what?
[Nas: laughs]
Yeah, my man Kool G Rap told me son do not look back
Chill up in the mansion with a fat glutious max, relax
When people act schoolin' with facts, tell 'em
At this point in my life I'm all about chillin'
Ridin' around in something sick and the dress flies
And twist, homie's hermano just died I gotta let it ride
That's what I got the public thinkin' my nigga
Just cause I ain't in the hood don't mean shit my nigga
I know who died before the body dropped
I know the guns that were used how much money the shooter got
'Cause on the private yacht I'm still within earshot of it all
The top ten list of the most grimiest guys of all time
Is all we talk when we talk of New York y'all
Who to call and who to stay away from
Whose mother's address to have just to play it safe son
Women they lust up so quick to give 'em up
What cars and what trucks they drive in what towns
They spend the most time in when they grindin'
I found out most of them are cowards they hidin'
Behind reputations that's sour
Not going back
[Kelis]
The streets keep tryin' to say
Come back around this way
I've already gone that way
I won't go back today
[Nas]
I'm not goin' back
[Kelis]
The streets keep tryin' to say
Come back around this way
I've already gone that way
I won't go back today
[Nas]
I'm not goin' back
First thing that happen when you make a little paper
You think the Marriot is livin' in a skyscraper
'Til you come across some ever more flyer paper
Realize that five-star 'tellies are even greater
Terry-cloth robes, elegance, movie shit
Heated-up marble floors with jacuzzis in it
First-class flights, diamonds in your crucifixes
All those things you still ain't really doin' shit kid
'Cause in reality I'll earn my salary
The way I flaunted it then would now embarrass me
It kinda make me wanna hate bling it's a race thing
How they sell blacks to bootleg shit infact
Real millionaires spend 60 mil on paintings
Whores charge niggaz with raping
'Cause we come out doors of Maybach cars
Watch us make bets on race tracks smokin' cigars
So they counter the laws to take what's ours
Bout 500K on a lawyer to beat the charge
So you can't stop us from making a billion dollars
Instead of goin' back I'm buying the projects
But I'm not going back
The hood's in me forever y'all
But I'm not going back
[Kelis]
The streets keep tryin' to say
Come back around this way
I've already gone that way
I won't go back today
[Nas]
I'm not goin' back
[Kelis]
The streets keep tryin' to say
Come back around this way
I've already gone that way
I won't go back today
[Nas]
And of course y'all know what I'm not going back to
Those no friends of mine
(And I'm not going back to)
Ten carat gold it shine
(And I'm never going back to)
Sony if they don't have dough to sign
(Not going back to)
Y'all know that I'm not going back to
Those liars who would
(Not going back to)
Not help you if they could
(Not going back to)
Coke on the stove in the hood
Y'all should know that I'm not going back
The hood's in me forever y'all
But I'm not going back
[Kelis]
The streets keep tryin' to say
Come back around this way
I've already gone that way
I won't go back today
[Nas]
I'm not goin' back
[Kelis]
The streets keep tryin' to say
Come back around this way
I've already gone that way
I won't go back today
[Nas]
I'm not goin' back
The song Not Going Back by Nas is a testament to his rise from the streets of Queens to a millionaire. The song is a reflection of Nas' success and how he maintains to stay true to his roots. The song explores Nas' reflections on his past and present, and how his views of success have changed since his rise to fame. Throughout the song, Nas talks about his current life, the people he has met, and his experiences with wealth. Nas also expresses concern about how the people in the hood have been sold into a one-dimensional life of poverty and crime with no way out.
The opening lyrics set a scene of Nas and Kelis trying to leave a dangerous situation. Nas explains to Kelis that he has some people on his tail but eventually says that it is alright, he fought them off. Kelis is confused about why Nas didn't just throw something out of the car. The conversation between Nas and Kelis highlights Nas' need for security and his focus on the future rather than the past. The remainder of the song reflects on this outlook.
Some of the key themes in the song are Nas' conflicted emotions about his past and his present, the impact of material wealth, and his desire to uplift the community. Not Going Back is a song about reflection and growth, and how fame and success can affect this trajectory. Nas doesn't want to forget where he came from, but he also doesn't want to lose sight of his future, which is why he won't go back.
