I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settles around us
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
Eh-eh-o eh-o
Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
Eh-eh-o eh-o
The song "Pompeii" by Kidz Bop describes the aftermath of a natural disaster or some kind of destruction that has occurred in the city they love. The opening line, "I was left to my own devices, many days fell away with nothing to show," highlights the loneliness and sense of despair the singer is feeling. The walls tumbling down and the grey clouds bring an overall feeling of hopelessness.
However, as the lyrics continue, there is a glimmer of optimism. The line "But if you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?" is repeated twice, suggesting that even though things have been destroyed, perhaps there is still hope for the future. The line "How am I gonna be an optimist about this?" emphasizes the difficulty of maintaining a positive outlook in the midst of destruction and chaos.
The chorus repeats the idea of closing your eyes and imagining that nothing has changed. There is a sense of déjà vu, as if the singer has been in this situation before. The final line of the song, "But if you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?" is repeated to emphasize the idea that even though everything has been destroyed, there is still hope for a better tomorrow.
Overall, "Pompeii" is a powerful song that explores the emotions and feelings that come with destruction and chaos. It acknowledges the despair that comes with disaster, but also offers a glimmer of hope for the future.

I was left to my own devices
I was alone with nothing to do
Many days fell away with nothing to show
Plenty of time wasted accomplishing nothing
And the walls kept tumbling down
Buildings around us kept collapsing
In the city that we love
In a city we care about
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Storm clouds approach from the distance
Bringing darkness from above
Causing darkness to fall over everything
But if you close your eyes
If you ignore the chaos around you
Does it almost feel like
Is it possible to believe
Nothing changed at all?
Things are still the same?
You've been here before?
Have you experienced something similar?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How can I stay positive in this situation?
We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
We were too engrossed in our bad habits to notice
In your pose as the dust settles around us
You remain in the same stance as everything else falls apart
Oh where do we begin?
What can we do to start over?
The rubble or our sins?
Which is causing more harm, physical destruction or our moral failings?
But if you close your eyes
Once again, if you ignore the destruction
Does it almost feel like
Can you believe
Nothing changed at all?
That nothing is different?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How can I keep my spirits up even with all of this going on?
