Stille Nacht
KING´S SINGERS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Alles schläft einsam wacht
Nur das traute hochheilige Paar.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel Halleluja,
Tönt es laut von fern und nah
Christ, der Retter ist da!
Christ, der Retter ist da!

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb' aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund'.

Christ, in deiner Geburt!
Christ, in deiner Geburt!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Stille Nacht" by KING'S SINGERS evoke a sense of peace and sacredness associated with the night of Christ's birth. The opening lines, "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, Alles schläft, einsam wacht," paint a picture of a tranquil night where everything is still and silent, yet there is a sense of vigilance or watchfulness present. This sets the tone for the rest of the song, highlighting the quiet beauty and significance of the night.

The mention of the "traute hochheilige Paar" (beloved holy couple) and the "Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar" (cherubic boy with curly hair) refers to the Holy Family, specifically Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. The imagery of the infant Jesus sleeping in heavenly peace is a poignant reminder of the divine nature of his birth and the sense of calm and serenity that surrounds it.

The second verse introduces the shepherds who were the first to receive the news of Christ's birth through the angels' proclamation of "Hallelujah". The contrast between the quiet night and the joyful proclamation of the angels emphasizes the awe-inspiring nature of the event and the universal significance of Christ's arrival as the Savior. The repetition of "Christ, der Retter ist da!" (Christ, the Savior is here) reinforces the message of hope and salvation brought by Jesus' birth.

The final verse focuses on the joy and love emanating from the divine mouth of "Gottes Sohn" (God's Son) as the moment of deliverance approaches. The mention of the "rettende Stund" (saving hour) signifies the pivotal moment of Christ's birth, where salvation and redemption are brought to humanity. The song concludes with the repeated declaration "Christ, in deiner Geburt!" (Christ, in your birth), emphasizing the central theme of the song - the profound impact and significance of Christ's birth for all mankind. Overall, the lyrics of "Stille Nacht" beautifully capture the essence of Christmas as a time of peace, joy, and divine love.

My grandfather was born in 1893. His parents died in an epidemic when he was three years old. He was placed into an orphanage in Louisville, KY, run by German Protestant Lutherans. It was a Dickensian childhood (and not in a good way), but he learned German, and each Christmas would sing "Stille nacht" in his beautiful bass-baritone. He would have loved this wonderful version. Thank you King Singers for the music, and for recalling this sweet memory of my Paw-Paw.
