With their make-up and costumes, the band members took on the personae of comic book-style characters: the Starchild (Stanley), the Demon (Simmons), the Spaceman or Space Ace (Frehley), and the Catman (Criss). Due to creative differences, both Criss and Frehley had departed the group by 1982.
In 1983, Kiss began performing without makeup and costumes, thus marking the beginning of the band's "unmasked" era that would last for over a decade. The band experienced a commercial resurgence during this era, with the Platinum-certified album Lick It Up successfully introducing them to a new generation of fans, and its music videos received regular airplay on MTV. Eric Carr, who had replaced Criss in 1980, died in 1991 of heart cancer and was replaced by Eric Singer. In response to a wave of Kiss nostalgia in the mid-1990s, the original lineup re-united in 1996, which also saw the return of its makeup and stage costumes. The resulting reunion tour was highly successful, grossing $143.7 million, making it the band's most successful tour to date. Criss and Frehley subsequently left the band again, and have been replaced by Singer and Tommy Thayer. The band has continued with its original stage makeup, with Singer and Thayer using the original Catman and Spaceman makeup, respectively. In September 2018, Kiss announced that, after 45 years of recording and performing, it would be embarking on its ongoing final tour, the End of the Road World Tour, which started in January 2019 and concluded in December 2023.
Kiss is regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time, as well as one of the best-selling bands of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide, including 21 million RIAA-certified albums. Kiss also holds the title as America's No. 1 Gold record award-winning group of all time, having earned 30 Gold albums. Kiss has 14 Platinum albums, with three albums being multi-Platinum. On April 10, 2014, the four original members of Kiss were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Kiss was ranked by MTV as the ninth "Greatest Metal Band of All Time", and placed tenth on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list, as well as being ranked as the third "Best Metal and Hard Rock Live Band of All Time" by Loudwire magazine.

Hate me, hurt me, say you love me
Love story (oh)
Hate me, hurt me, say you love me
Not gonna lie, lie, lie
듣고 싶어 now, now
Say you love me
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Hate me, hurt me, love me
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Hate me, hurt me, love me
난 너를 보면 drippin'
계속 꿈꿔 왔던 dreaming
I just wanna take ya, your love ya
Hate me, hurt me, love me
I'm feeling on my heart beat
Hate me, hurt me, say you love me
Love story (oh)
Hate me, hurt me, say you love me
Not gonna lie, lie, lie
듣고 싶어 now, now
Say you love me
Hate me, hurt me, say you love me
Love story (ooh)
Hate me, hurt me, say you love me
Not gonna lie, lie, lie (nah-hah)
듣고 싶어 now, now
Say you love me
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Hate me, hurt me, love me
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Hate me, hurt me, love me
Say you love me
The lyrics of Kiss’s song Hate talks about the dark truth concerning humanity’s heart of darkness, which is hate. The song has a repetitious chorus that says, “Hate is what I am 'cause underneath this heart, there beats the heart of man,” emphasizing how destructive hate is in humanity. The song reflects on the idea that human beings always end up in the same place, no matter the role they play, whether they are martyrs, butchers, saints, or sinners. The song touches on religious themes, such as assuming the crown of glory in death, and how humanity was created in the image of God. However, the lyrics state that humans have failed to live up to that image over time.
The song feels like a proclamation of anger and an outcry against human evil. It highlights the helplessness of human beings against their inner desires, such as hate, which drives them to oppress and destroy others. The lyrics point out that everyone is guilty of hate, the martyrs, saviors, butchers, saints, and sinners. Kiss seems to suggest that we should realize this truth and fight against hate in ourselves and others, since we all bear the same heart of darkness.
Line by Line Meaning
Hate, is what I am
I embody hate.
'cause underneath this heart
Beneath the surface of my being,
There beats the heart of man
lies the quintessential nature of humanity.
You'll wear your crown
When you die,
When you're lyin' 6 feet underground
and have been buried six feet deep,
Don't you think it's odd
Isn't it strange how
Man was created in the image of god
man was made to resemble God?
All you martyrs and saviours
Those who willingly suffer and those who aid or rescue others,
Go through the same door
all face the same fate.
Listen all you butchers, saints and sinners
Everyone who kills, holy ones, and transgressors,
We've all been here before
have faced and will face the same fate.
So you're lookin' for a savior
If you seek someone to deliver you,
But I'm here to tell ya
know that I am here to explain to you
You gotta save yourself
that it is up to you to rescue yourself.
Like a lamb to slaughter
You have blindly followed the commands of others,
All you ever did was follow orders
doing nothing on your own.
Hey listen all you butchers, saints and sinners
I call to those who kill, the holy, and those who break the rules,
Hate hate!
I hate, I hate.
Yes, hate is what I am
Indeed, hate is what defines me.
Cause' underneath this heart
Because beneath my exterior,
There beats the heart of man, man
there is the beating of humanity.
