We Wish You A Merry Christmas
KITCHEN - John Denver Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Okay everybody, here we go)

We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
And a happy New Year

Now bring us a figgy pudding
(Piggy pudding?)
No, Figgy pudding, it's made with figs (oh sorry)
and bacon (what?)

We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
And a happy New Year

We won't go until we get some (won't go, won't go)
We won't go until we get some (won't go, won't go)
We won't go until we get some (won't go, won't go, Animal, sit, bad))
So bring some out here

We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
And a happy New Year

We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas
And a happy New Year

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" by John Denver are a playful and spirited rendition of the classic Christmas carol. The opening lines convey the singer's warm wishes for a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all listeners. The repetition of these lines adds to the festive and joyful atmosphere of the song, creating a sense of unity and cheer among those celebrating the holiday season.

The playful banter in the song comes when the singers request for figgy pudding, a traditional British dessert made with figs, and humorously mistaken for "piggy pudding" by one of the singers. The confusion between figgy pudding and bacon adds a lighthearted and comedic element to the song, showing a whimsical side to the singers as they engage in a light-hearted exchange during the festive season.

The repeated insistence on not leaving until they receive some figgy pudding further emphasizes the jovial and slightly demanding nature of the singers as they playfully demand the sweet treat. Overall, the song "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" captures the essence of holiday cheer, camaraderie, and goodwill. So great seeing all the original voice actors doing the muppets all together in one show, there will never be another Jim Henson, I miss him so much.

What I love about this special is there ain't no big bad evil villain trynna destroy their Christmas or some crap like that it's just the Muppets and Sesame Street enjoying the holiday and having a good time. Only conflict is will Miss Piggy make it to the house

@TheBadGuyMikeWerley

This is one of my all time favorite Christmas movies. It always amazes me that this never gets talked about when people rank the best Christmas movies. This has it all and is an absolute classic.

@edmccray212

It's on my top list too. Plus this is Jim's swan song. He died 2 years later.
