Weeds
KITCHEN - Pulp Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We came across the North Sea with our carriers on our knees
Wound up in some holding camp somewhere outside Leeds.
Because we do not care to fight, my friends - we are the weeds.
Because we got no homes they call us smelly refugees.

We are weeds, vegetation, dense undergrowth.
Through' cracks in the pavement: there weeds will grow
The places you don't go.

This cut-price dairy produce that turns our bones to dust.
You want some entertainment?
Go on, shove it up me - if you must.
Make believe you're so turned on by planting trees & shrubs
But you come round to visit us when you fancy booze 'n' drugs.

We are weeds, vegetation, dense undergrowth.
Through' cracks in the pavement: there weeds will grow
The places you don't go.

If you think it's a crime
We'd like to get you out of your mind.
It's just a matter of time, yeah
We'd like to get you out of your mind.
Gonna cut you down in your prime, yeah
We'd like to get you out of your mind.

For a little time: for all time.
Weed.

Overall Meaning

"Weeds" by Pulp is a song that tackles the themes of social exclusion, prejudice, and the stigma attached to marginalized individuals within society. The lyrics highlight the experiences of a group of people referred to as "weeds" who have been displaced and find themselves living in a holding camp outside Leeds. The lyrics suggest that these people are refugees who have been forced to leave their homes.

The first verse starts with a vivid image of the group's arrival, carrying their belongings on their knees as they cross the North Sea. They end up in a holding camp because they choose not to fight, distinguishing themselves from others who may be engaged in conflict. Due to their lack of homes, they are derogatorily referred to as "smelly refugees." The term "weeds" represents their undesired and unwanted presence, akin to vegetation that grows in spaces others avoid.

The second verse criticizes the exploitation and neglect faced by the marginalized group. The reference to "cut-price dairy produce" suggests that the sustenance they receive is of poor quality, negatively affecting their health and well-being. The following lines reflect their objectification for entertainment purposes, inviting others to "shove it up" them if desired. Additionally, it comments on the hypocrisy of those who claim to care about environmental issues, but only interact with the weeds when seeking pleasure through substances like alcohol and drugs.

Overall, the song sheds a light on the dehumanization and mistreatment faced by marginalized individuals, emphasizing their resilience and survival in the face of adversity.

Thank you for the video. I am using a large clay terracotta pot as well. Clay pots help my plants roots breathe so I figured the same would apply to my compost. I never thought of adding eggshells! The English subtitles were considerate of you. Even without the subtitles, I enjoyed watching this video. Also, your background music did not bother me at all! Thanks for a great video.

Thank you very very much ... Actually we live in India ... Too hot climate ... So we can not grow outdoor plants in plastic pot ... And an earthen pot always better than a plastic one ...
Eggshells are very good source of calcium and phosphorus ... Try to use it ...

Thanks again .. 🙏🙏🙏

Nice Video! I love simple techniques when it comes to gardening. Many of the videos on youtube are so complex but always refreshing to see it doesn't have to be so complicated.

The video is great. Practical para sa mga city gardeners. Thanks. Hope you can also help us who are new or rookies in gardening to cope with pests: kina kain na dahon ng lettuce o kaya nagiging yellow or brown yung dahon.
