Isolation
KITCHEN - TOTO Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm stranded here in a dream and there's no ticket back
I feel a cold wind blowin', my future looks black
You left me here and you've taken all my yesterdays
I guess to stand alone is the price that I pay
Now look what you've done to me
Because we just disagree
I'm out here alone and it's you that I'm waiting for
Can't go livin' without you, girl
It doesn't matter what you say or do, girl
Can't go livin' without you, girl
Isolation

I close my eyes and you're dancin' in the moonlight with me
I try to touch you, but you, you had to get free
I turned around and you're nowhere left in sight
I'm just a lone survivor, you know it ain't right
Now look what you've done to me
Because we just disagree
I'm out here alone and it's you that I'm waiting for

Can't go livin' without you, girl
You know that I'll be waiting here for you, girl
Can't go livin' without you, girl
Isolation

I remember holding you just yesterday
But you're memory is all that I have today
We were talking 'bout promises we once had made
But you never came back
Why'd you run away
(You ran away)

Can't go livin' without you, girl
It doesn't matter what you say or do
Can't go livin' without you, girl
Isolation
Girl, I'm so isolated
Can't go livin' without you, girl, oh
Girl, you know I'm gonna wait for you

Can't go livin' without you, girl
Isolation

Overall Meaning

"Isolation" by TOTO is a song that reflects on the feeling of being stranded and alone after a relationship has come to an end. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and emptiness, as the singer feels like they are trapped in a dream without any way to return to reality. The mention of a cold wind blowing and a black future suggests that the singer sees no hope or happiness in their present situation.

The song highlights the pain of being left behind by someone they truly cared about. The line "You left me here and you've taken all my yesterdays" depicts a sense of loss and bitterness towards the person who left. The chorus emphasizes the singer's dependency on this person, expressing that they cannot go on living without them. The repeated line "I'm out here alone, and it's you that I'm waiting for" illustrates the desperation and longing for reconciliation.

In the second verse, the lyrics describe a moment of nostalgia and yearning for the past. The singer envisions dancing with their former partner under the moonlight, but is unable to physically touch them. The feeling of abandonment is palpable as they turn around to find no trace of their loved one. The reference to being a "lone survivor" suggests that the singer feels like they have been left to fend for themselves in the aftermath of the breakup.

Overall, "Isolation" articulates the emotional turmoil of being left behind and the pain of longing for someone who is no longer there. It encapsulates the feeling of isolation that can come with the end of a relationship, leaving the singer longing for the return of their lost love.

There was a man who walked alone
Searching for the girl who had just caught his eye
I was a fool!, he cried
His mind had wandered
He blinked and the sky moved ever so slightly
He searched the city and she was nowhere to be found
Meanwhile she was floating downward, downward

Do you want your freedom?
Do you want my love?
Do you want your freedom
From the one you're thinking of?

There lied a lady
Naked and yet not knowing
A spell had chained her heart forever
Preyed upon by the wolves in Times Square
Fell into an abyss of thin air
Innocent 'n caged in sanctuary
There sat the dragon Lord playing solitary
Confined to rule the holy walls 'neath Hell's Kitchen

Do you want your freedom?
Do you want my love?
Do you want your freedom
From the man who lives above?

Suddenly a voice was heard
In a flash the brave young man appeared
The dragon whirled and caught him with his tail
Chased him to the stairway
Caught him halfway to the top
Sent him whirling down
Fireballs, summer solstice
The Dragon Lord descended down on him
She turned to look but saw only darkness, silence

You don't want your freedom
You don't want my love
You don't want your throat cut
By the Satan I'm thinking of

I am a big fan of Toto and when I happen to play any of their videos on YouTube I end up trapped in a Toto hits marathon. I don't know if I could ever pick a favorite Toto album but this one could very well be it. Bands like Toto and Saga deserve more recognition than what they get. Still enjoying their classic s in 2021.
