The Sound
KITCHEN - The 1975 Lyrics

Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart
Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart

I can't believe I forgot your name
Oh baby won't you come again?
She said "I've got a problem with your shoes and your tunes
But I might move in" and
"I thought that you were straight, now I'm wondering"

You're so conceited, I
Said "I love you"
What does it matter if I lie to you?
I don't regret it but I'm glad that we're through
So don't you tell me that you 'just don't get it'
'Cause I know you do

Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart
Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart

It's not about reciprocation it's just all about me
A sycophantic, prophetic, Socratic junkie wannabe
There's so much skin to see
A simple Epicurean Philosophy
And you say I'm such a cliche
I can't see the difference in it either way
And we left things to protect my mental health
But you call me when you're bored and you're playing with yourself

You're so conceited, I
Said "I love you"
What does it matter if I lie to you?
I don't regret it but I'm glad that we're through
So don't you tell me that you 'just don't get it'
'Cause I know you do

Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart
Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart
Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart
Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart

Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart
Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart
Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart

Well I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound, of your heart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "The Sound" by The 1975 discuss themes of recognition, deception, and self-obsession in a relationship. The repeated phrase "I know the sound of your heart" relates to the singer's familiarity with their partner's presence and emotions.

The first verse reflects the singer's certainty of their partner's presence by recognizing the sound of their heart. It could be interpreted as a metaphor for understanding their feelings and intentions. The repetition emphasizes the importance of this recognition in their relationship.

The second verse introduces a conflict, where the partner expresses dissatisfaction with the singer's choices in fashion and music. However, they suggest a willingness to overlook these issues by considering moving in together. Surprisingly, the partner also questions the singer's sexual orientation, indicating a level of uncertainty or confusion.

The pre-chorus and chorus highlight the singer's conceited nature and their admission of lying to their partner. It reflects an attitude of self-importance where they prioritize themselves and their desires over the feelings of their partner. Despite this confession, the singer does not feel regret, suggesting a lack of emotional investment in the relationship.

The bridge further emphasizes the singer's self-obsession and their indulgence in pleasure and sensory experiences. The mention of protecting their mental health demonstrates a decision to end the relationship for self-preservation. However, the partner still reaches out to them out of boredom and self-indulgence, further reflecting the singer's lack of genuine connection.

Overall, the lyrics present a picture of a relationship marred by deception, self-centeredness, and a lack of emotional investment from the singer's perspective. The repeated lines throughout the song reinforce the singer's recognition of their partner's presence and emotions while highlighting their own detached and self-absorbed nature.

@Newee

"leave me alone" "I know the sound of your heart" these two lines being juxtaposed to each other gives me chills

@BrandonBeckelheimer

Seriously. A beautiful example of cognitive dissonance. When you’re absolutely so in love with someone but you need them to fuck off. Such a weird feeling and I regret ever feeling it.

@Em-hg2uc

Woah. This is weird. The sound layers. Woah. It like, makes nauseous but like, not in a bad way. Cool. This sounds great and it's very well done.

@Em-hg2uc

I wrote this while that weird moment that kinda gave me anxiety was happening. It's just so fricking cool. This mashup is honestly so great. My thoughts are still really oddly fragmented lol

@InanimateMashups

Glad you like it man, thanks :)

@DJJBrew

Damn wasn't expecting these songs to work so well!!

@blueyoshi623

oh my god, this mashup overwhelmed me so much that i literally started crying

@tanzeemahmed7196

I can't believe that after this many months this still has such few views. The mashups on this channel are all incredible. I seriously cannot tell you how many times I've listened to The 1975 and MCR mashup albums to act as my muses while I do art! For some unknown reason all my pieces are either overly emo and pissed off or overly dreamy and pretentious... Maybe I'm channelling the essences of Matty and Gerard?

@youremindmeofthebabe7066

how does this go so well together??? i'M ShOOk

@gabs512

I was driving today and out of the blue this mashup popped into my head. So glad I came back to revisit almost 4 years later! It's a masterpiece.
