End Of The Line
KITCHEN - The Offspring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the siren's flash is gone
And we're left to carry on
All the memories are too few
When the pastor's music plays
And that casket rolls away
I could live again if you
Just stay alive for me
Please stay now, you left me here alone
It's the end of the line
Please stay, I can't make it on my own
Make it on my own (it's the end of the line)
Whoa
It's the end of the line
Whoa

Now that you are dead and gone
And I'm left to carry on
I could never smile 'cause you
Won't stay alive for me

Please stay now, you left me here alone
It's the end of the line
Please stay, I can't make it on my own
Make it on my own (it's the end of the line)
Whoa
It's the end of the line
Whoa

Finally
Your final resting day
Is without me
I weep
And think of brighter days
What about me?

You can't take back the one mistake
That still lives on after life it takes
In that one day that changed our lives
And bitter memories are left behind
You can't take back the one mistake (whoa)
That still lives on after life it takes
In that one day that changed our lives (whoa)
And bitter memories are left behind, oh yeah

Please stay now, you left me here alone (whoa)
It's the end of the line
Please stay, I can't make it on my own (whoa)
Make it on my own (it's the end of the line)
Please stay now, you left me here alone (whoa)

It's the end of the line
Please stay, I can't make it on my own (whoa)

Overall Meaning

The song "End of the Line" by The Offspring is a heart-wrenching piece about the pain of loss and the desire to hold on to what is gone. The lyrics describe the aftermath of a loved one's death and the overwhelming feeling of being left alone with memories that are all too few. The references to sirens and caskets suggest that the loved one may have died in tragic circumstances, and the lines "I could live again if you/Just stay alive for me" reveal the singer's desperate longing to have their loved one back. The chorus repeats the plea for the loved one to stay, with the final lines "It's the end of the line" signaling the finality of death and the painful reality that the singer must continue on without their loved one.

This was a staple at my local rock club in the nineties. I could never really make out the words, largely due to the insanely large and loud speakers making it impenetrable, but I always guessed it was something about keeping kids apart. Never realised it was about gang violence until it popped up recently on a 90s rock playlist on Spotify and I decided to check out the lyrics. The other thing that hit me was just how good The Offspring were (this was one of three of theirs on that playlist, the other two being Self Esteem and The Kids Aren’t Alright)

I’m well beyond my sixties and always liked this song just for the upbeat tempo but never fully understood what was being sung. Now I can really sink my teeth into it and I love it. Great song with great lyrics…..Truth right there. Thanks for posting the lyrics.🤙🤙🤙

They're actually pretty damn good lyrics how the gang crap really corrupted youthful innocence. Poignant tune to this day! Thanks for doing them up Lina! :)
