If he was trying to sound Glaswegian, he didn't. What Limmy was saying was not that he couldn't understand the words but the context. Why is 'don't grate in the grinder' funny? Is it a commonly used phrase in USA? Or some sort of reference to one of his films or something. I mean, perhaps there was an hilarious incident in Carrey's youth when he tried to grate cheese in a coffee grinder and his Granddad had a breakdown, but without us knowing that he's just a guy manically shouting something. The reaction he was getting, and the skit itself, was just bizarre. Generally us Scots, with our varying accents, understand each other as well as folks from any other nation.

@Mechanomics there's a difference between a logical fallacy in a debate and an entire country of neural networks (people) trained to recognise a Scottish accent as "normal", voice assistants literally have to be trained to recognise specific objective differences between accents so when someone is attempting to mimic an accent and someone native to that accent says the attempt is a bad accent, you can be pretty certain that its not a good attempt at the accent

@Supertails Wow, live? I showed up late to appreciating Norm. I always liked him and loved him on Conan and other talkshows; but, I never appreciated his genius until around 2017 or so. I didn't even know he had a web show until around that time, which was comedy gold. He was the first famous person who I actually cried when he died. He was a true comedian's comic.

P.S. I'd have Tom Cruise my fucking party too. That would be a spectacle... It would go one of two ways if Carrey came... He'd either feel obligated to "act funny" like he is in this video and force everything, or he'd just be a know-it-all, existential asshole to everyone whenever people try to talk to him. Cruise over Carrey ANY DAY.

It's similar to "horses for courses"; specific tools are suitable for specific things. If you see a tradesman driving in a nail with the butt of a screwdriver you might say "don't grate it in a grinder". Im Scottish and have never heard this either but I'd think it's probably something to do with wheat, where grading it is sorting it by various qualities for different purposes, leaving that to when it's at the stage of being ground for flour would be too late with the possibility of the whole lot being discarded.
It's not anything like 'dont use a sledgehammer to crack a nut' but more to do with choosing your path wisely and timely instead of leaving it with the possibility of finding yourself too far down the wrong path.

I take it to mean more like don't judge the quality until the processing is done. It's apt advice when watching a movie trailer. Some trailers are edited for maximum hype, but the final whole movie is a disappointment, while a terrible-looking trailer might hide a compelling movie. Basically, don't judge an entire 90-minute movie solely on a 2-minute trailer.

Her family sued him with a wrongful death suit and he had to fight them in court for a while. After investigating the police saw it was bogus, but I think that still did a number on Jim's sanity.

Whilst Limmy is tongue in cheek here he is also humourously correct. Remember he is a veteran comedian and he knows crowd laughter when he hears it. The canned laughter to Carey's "avatar, metaverse" joke was just that. Limmy half jokingly asks "was that funny?" But whilst Limmy was being light he was also right. The joke for me wasn't terrible but it didn't get any out loud reaction from me either. I've laughed out loud rewatching certain Limmy skits from his previous show but this slightly humorous quip by Carey hardly had me smile. The post production of some of these shows do dumb the audience at home from what's really funny and what is plain bland gag writing

if you think watching something at home, alone in front of your computer will give you the same result as being at a huge event filled with people, you're completely wrong. you're much more likely to laugh in a social setting, with a lot of people around you that are also laughing, even if the joke isn't particularily funn, than when you're by yourself watching something on the computer. ever watched a movie without laughing a single time, then watched the same movie with a friend and laughed hysterically?

It took me a while to figure it out, but his grandfather pretty much said "Keep doing what you do best. Just don't wear yourself down in the process." Like how one is grating with food. His English and American accents are intentionally done badly to accentuate their mannerisms.

Like most Scottish people, Limmy can probably do a perfect English accent if he wanted to (it just wouldn't be as funny as it is when he delivers it in the over the top way that he does).

So yes i agree, his accents are terrible, but it's done intentionally.

I'm pretty sure "don't grate it in the grinder" means if there's a mistake in something you've made, fix it (grate it) but don't fix it by destroying it entirely (grate it in the grinder) which, I ASSUME, is referencing the embarrassing first version of the Sonic movie that had to be changed because it looked so hellish. It was changed (grated) but not cancelled outright (in the grinder)
