Hangman
Kai Straw Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

May rain pour and bring me outside my home
To chase hurricanes and boast
That I've seen eyes inside these foes
Of planes, champagne and roads
That I decline my life as some simple insult
To time

So here's the melody, I'm Jericho

Now, if it's treasonous to
Wreck these walls then hang me too
I'll pay my dues
I'd rather hang here from my
Head and neck than live inside abused
So tie the noose may lakes overflow
And may I sail my house, and float
Through states, like a freight of coal
And change the home I call my own
To just my skin and bones
And as escaping, watch myself unfold
Like all those stories we're told
Or those we wrote
While wishing for something more

Or I will just fly away

And yeah
It's treasonous to wreck these walls and
They'll hang you too in plain view
But we'll be hanging there
All caught up in the end as slaves to who?
The hangman knew

If they let me drop
They'll envy how free I've become

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Kai Straw's song "Hangman" convey a strong sense of defiance and rebellion against societal expectations and constraints. The song starts with a reference to rain, symbolizing a change or cleansing, and the singer's desire to step outside their comfort zone and confront challenges head-on. The line "To chase hurricanes and boast" suggests a willingness to face dangerous situations and take pride in their experiences. The mention of "eyes inside these foes" hints at the ability to see beyond surface appearances and understand the hidden motivations of others.

The lyrics then express the singer's refusal to lead a mundane and restricted life, rejecting the idea that their existence is an insult to time. They provide a defiant stance, declaring their own identity with the line "So here's the melody, I'm Jericho," referring to Jericho as a symbol of strength and resilience.

The next section of the song emphasizes the costs the singer is willing to pay for breaking down walls and living authentically. The repeated notion of hanging is metaphorical, representing the risks of going against the norm and facing potential consequences. The line "Tie the noose may lakes overflow" implies that even if the world around them becomes chaotic, the singer will continue to pursue their true self. They are willing to relinquish material possessions and change their concept of home to find freedom.

The final lines convey a sense of liberation that comes from fully embracing their own path. The singer sees their freedom as something to be envied by others, highlighting the contrast between living a constrained life and flying away to experience true freedom.

Overall, "Hangman" is a powerful anthem about defying societal expectations, embracing individuality, and accepting the potential risks and consequences that come with living life on one's own terms.

Kai, I have been listening to your songs, mostly your old ones, and what I can see is that you had a similar psyche to myself and I wanted to ask, how do I allow myself to enjoy life. Because at this moment of time I'm tired. Tired of the media, tired of social standards, tired of lying, tired of this world, and tired of myself. And when I was younger I tried to kill myself but I was too scared. Now I'm up to the point where I can't even feel anything when I put a loaded gun to my head. I just feel hollow. I been to therapy, I tried talking it out, and medication but I still feel this way. What I am really asking is how do I make myself feel live again.

@KaiStraw

This may sound corny, man, but happiness takes discipline. When I decided that I was going to recover from my own addiction to self-hatred, and it was a decision, it began with - I'm going to walk to the end of this block, and after the end of this block, I can have all the negative thoughts I want for the rest of the day. Once I claimed that block, and every day I could walk it in peace, it then became two blocks, then the whole walk to the bus, then the whole walk to the bus and the ride on the bus and an hour at home, and so on. You've got to decide to claim your joy, you fight for it with everything you've got, and then you protect it. I became very aware of what type of movies I watched and their impact on me, the people I was around, the type of music I listened to; everything you put into your mind impacts how you behave and what you think about. I'm paraphrasing, but there's that saying, 'as a man thinketh, so he becomes'; and it's true. I started eating healthier. I quit drinking. I stopped staying up late - instead forcing myself to wake up at 5AM and go to sleep at 10PM. I started working out every morning. That structure helped me reclaim myself. I'm happy that you're connecting with my old stuff, because I think it can make people feel less alone in their own struggle - but as you listen to it, I want you to know that the person who recorded this made it out of that black hole, and so can you.

@jeffyanderson9861

Also that was not corny in the slightest.
Hope you can see my response to yours.
