I can't get the last verse. First three go like this, I think:

My name is Death and none can excel,
I can open the gates to Heaven or Hell.
I can cast aside the flesh of thee,
Cast them aside and set you free.

Oh, oh Death,
Can't you spare me over 'til another year?

I lock their jaws so they can't talk,
Stiffen their legs so they can't walk,
Close their eyes so they can't see,
The chill you feel, all come from me.

Oh Death...

Mama, Mama, come to my bed,
and place a cold rag on my head.
My eyes are closing, I cannot see
I feel the sheet pulling over me.

I am death, and none can excel
I'll open the doors to heaven or hell
What is this that I can't see
With icy hands taking hold on me

Oh death, oh death
Can't you spare me over till another year

I'll lock your jaw so you can't talk
I'll fix your feet so you can't walk
Close your eyes so you can't see
This very hour come go with me

Mother come to my bed
Place a cold towel upon my head
My head is warm, my feet is cold
Death is a-moving upon my soul

Oh death, someone would pray
Couldn't you call some other day
The children's prayed, the preacher's preached
The time of mercy is out of your reach

'Tis Death, I come to take the soul
Leave the body and leave it cold
To drop the flesh off of the frame
The earth and worms both have a claim

Oh death, how you're treating me
You're closing my eyes so I can't see
You're hurtin' my body, you're makin' me cold
You're moving my life right out of my soul

Oh death, please consider my age
Please don't take me at this stage
My wealth is all at your command
If you would move your icy hand

The old, the young, the rich and poor
All alike with me, you know
No wealth no land, No silver nor gold
Nothing satisfies me but your soul

A truly incredible band. One of the best of the 60's. Why didn't they get more attention?

Years ago I was on a David Lindley 'unplugged' show. He said that this was one of his personal favorites from his time with Kaleidoscope and then did a great version of it. Nice touch, but nothing comes close to this take. It goes right into the core of my soul, sending shivers down my spine.

My favorite cover, especially when played at 75% speed. One of the 60’s best bands.

I first heard this when I was 15 or 16 and it has been my version of choice. I lived without a radio or record player from 1976 thru 1999, never lost these tunes. Some tunes are different. I can live without Quicksilver Messenger, Jefferson Airplane and even the Grateful Dead. These folks are as rich now as then. Patty the Pooh

Indiana University Press' The Journal of Folklore Research features articles in an 2004 issue asserting the "O, Death" is Lloyd-Chandler's song "A Conversation with Death", which he performed for several years while preaching in Appalachia. Moran Lee "Dock" Boggs (1898-1971) recorded the song in the late 1920s.

I saw them do this at the Avalon in '67, when this was still a fresh track. The saz player was later the blacksmith at Black Point Renaissance Fair, knew him well in '86, too!

Me too... I even cut the radio ads for the show at KYA, I used this track... "This weekend at the Avalon... Kaleidoscope" OH DEATH... it was funny to hear in the middle of the Top 40 songs and DJ's.
