Wheels
Kansas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See the words appear on the wall
There for every man who's standing tall
This water's pure, the well is so deep
The only treasure that a man can keep

Miles to go, and I feel the weight
Of these chains that I create
As I climb to the top of the hill
It draws me still
And I can't look back

The heart keeps on burning
Oh, wheels, wheels, don't slow down
My soul keeps on yearning
Oh, wheels, wheels, roll me homeward bound

I'm looking through the eyes of a child
Like the innocent and unbeguiled
From the east, and far to the west
Soldiers conquer in a royal quest

One by one, as the seasons change
I press on in a world so strange
As I climb to the top of the hill
It draws me still
And I won't look back

The heart keeps on burning
Oh, wheels, wheels, don't slow down
My soul keeps on yearning
Oh, wheels, wheels, roll me homeward bound

We are marching in time
To the reason and rhyme
As the glory of youth starts to fade
There's no burden to bear
For a debt that is already paid

The heart keeps on burning
Oh, wheels, wheels, don't slow down

My soul keeps on yearning
Oh, wheels, wheels, roll me homeward bound

Overall Meaning

In Kansas's song, "Wheels," the lyrics seem to convey a message of perseverance, determination, and a longing to return home, both physically and metaphorically. The imagery is rich with symbolism. The "words appear on the wall" that "every man who's standing tall" can see, suggests that the message is available to those who are willing to see it. The "water's pure, the well is so deep, the only treasure that a man can keep" seems to be referring to the soul or inner self that we must delve into in order to find what truly matters. The singer acknowledges that the journey is long and difficult, as he carries the weight of his own self-imposed "chains" up the hill towards the top where he is being drawn. He is like a child, innocent and full of wonder, as he moves through the world, despite the challenges, and soldiers conquer in their "royal quest," perhaps a reference to the illusion of material success and the trappings of wealth. The singer is marching in time, but not without purpose, as he is seeking redemption for a debt that is already paid.

Interestingly, "Wheels" is known for being the only recorded Kansas song that does not feature lead singer Steve Walsh on lead vocals. Instead, John Elefante, who later became the band's lead singer, is featured. In addition, the song was written by bassist Dave Hope who had left the band by the time it was recorded. Another fun fact is that the album on which "Wheels" appears, "Vinyl Confessions," was the last Kansas album to go gold. The use of the word "wheels" is significant as it suggests movement and momentum. The band's name "Kansas" itself is derived from a Native American word for "people of the south wind." The line, "We're marching in time to the reason and rhyme," is reminiscent of a military cadence, and could be interpreted in that way. The song's driving beat and soaring harmonies are signature Kansas sound, though it is not as well-known as some of their other big hits like "Dust in the Wind" or "Carry on Wayward Son."

Jon Hiller Yes! I’ve never been super into Kansas but my dad has been big into them since he was young. I got to experience them live two days ago and this song really touched me. A wonderful performance from an incredibly talented group

Written by Kerry Livgren, found on " The Kansas Box Set" , masterpiece, as usual. David Ragsdale on violin.

I have followed Kerry my whole life. From Kansas to AD, Proto-Kaw, his best album (in my opinion) When things get Electric and everything in between. I would love to meet him again and possibly Jamm w/ him. Me and my brothers saw AD at Holten College in 85. I was 15 then. Such great music. Carried me through my 24 years in the Navy. Him and Phil Keaggy.

Beth Leinicke

The song is perfection only with Steve Walsh singing it! It would have no appeal to me with anyone else failing to hit his level of vocal perfection. Steve & Phil (with David on violin) were the three geniuses in the band; although Richard is a decent guitarist.
