Your Good Thing
Kanye West Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Heart made of stone hands made of hearth
Heartache so long good things don't last
Good things don't last
Good things don't last
Good things don't last good things
You gotta brace for that fall
Made for this song made for so long
If you'd care for me, my baby

Oh, oh, so long waves so far up
Good things don't last
Good things don't last
Good things don't last good things, good
Richer or poor better or worst
Last or first hungry or thirst
Sad things sad news
Good things to do nothing for you
What it means to you
Can't change or change you you can't let it
You can't rearrange you you can't let it
Heart made of stone love made of glass
Love turning cold good things don't last

We had a good thing it's good, it's good, uh
We had a good thing, no, no, no

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics, Kanye West explores the theme of transience and the impermanence of good things in life. He starts by depicting a heart made of stone and hands made of hearth, symbolizing emotional hardness and warmth simultaneously. This juxtaposition sets the tone for the song, suggesting that despite longing for love and connection, heartache has been a consistent companion, leading to a belief that good things don't last.

The repetition of the line "good things don't last" emphasizes the singer's resignation and acceptance of this reality. It reflects a cynicism developed from experiencing disappointment and loss repeatedly. The repetition also serves as a sort of self-affirmation or mantra to prepare oneself for the inevitable fall that comes after experiencing something positive.

The lyrics then introduce the idea of being "made for this song" or enduring heartache for a long time, indicating a familiarity with suffering. The phrase "if you'd care for me, my baby" expresses a longing for genuine affection and connection, suggesting that despite the coldness and repeated disappointment, the singer still yearns for someone who truly cares.

The next verse explores contrasts, presenting different aspects of life such as richer or poorer, better or worse, last or first, hungry or thirsty. These opposites emphasize the uncertainty and unpredictability of life, highlighting that even in the face of sadness and bad news, doing good things doesn't seem to bring any personal fulfillment. It suggests the singer's belief that their actions and efforts have been futile in bringing lasting happiness or satisfaction.

The concluding lines depict a love that has turned cold, representing the gradual decay of affection and intimacy. The phrase "we had a good thing" acknowledges that there was once a positive and fulfilling connection, but it couldn't withstand the test of time. The repetition of "good, it's good" followed by a strong denial of the past suggests a reluctance to accept the loss and an attempt to hold onto the fleeting memories of happiness.

Overall, Kanye West's "Your Good Thing" delves into the recognition and acceptance of the transitory nature of good things in life, particularly in relationships. It showcases the artist's introspection and contemplation of emotional hardness, a longing for genuine connection, and the disenchantment that arises from repeatedly experiencing heartache and disappointment.

***** Fine. Lets take this into consideration. And i expect a valid rebuttal or else i will not reply.

Kanye changed hip-hop. He has 6 of the most acclaimed albums ever released (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is regarded the best album of the 2010's so far). Lets not ignore the fact that he has 21 Grammy awards.

His albums have been well received by legendary musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, Bono, Bruno Mars, Nas, Elton John, and even Obama (despite his Jackass comment referring to Kanye). The list goes on but i'll stop there.

He changes his style on every single album of his. He began with soul sampling on his first album, to a baroque approach on his second album, then he incorporated electro/disco in his third..... all the way to his most recent album Yeezus, which was industrial hip-hop. He can mix genres, sample without difficulty, and is a VERY creative artist, who is overlooked because of his childlike antics.

I feel you haven't listened to his music and hate because you do what the other brainwashed sheep do. But there i proved your point wrong.

I miss the old Kanye, straight from the 'Go Kanye
Chop up the soul Kanye, set on his goals Kanye
I hate the new Kanye, the bad mood Kanye
The always rude Kanye, spaz in the news Kanye
I miss the sweet Kanye, chop up the beats Kanye
I gotta to say at that time I'd like to meet Kanye
See I invented Kanye, it wasn't any Kanyes
And now I look and look around and there's so many Kanyes
I used to love Kanye, I used to love Kanye
I even had the pink polo, I thought I was Kanye
What if Kanye made a song about Kanye
Called "I Miss The Old Kanye, " man that would be so Kanye
That's all it was Kanye, we still love Kanye
And I love you like Kanye loves Kanye

No matter what Kanye does or how irrationally he acts in the present day, nothing will ever take away from the fact that he’s made some of the best music in his generation.

I joined the military and was gone from home for 10 years. I relied on this song to make it back home and be with my friends and family. This song was my lifeline. I got out of the military and my family and friends were different. I came home but my home wasn't there. Listening to this song is like sitting in the past and I remember the good times. I wish I never joined so that I could have held onto what made me feel whole-family and friends. Now, I use the music that was out when I joined to remember the past. It gives me goosebumps. I wish things were the way they were before but time moves on.
