@Dana B there's a sun when educated assumption, but you must remember that the actors that were successful in silent films or not great successes necessarily in sound films. More stage actors were recruited for film acting at the time then of course any time before. As everyone knows, a stage performance that comes over perfectly to the audience is magnified by the camera and that's easily become exaggerated. But I don't really find the acting in these films to be highly exaggerated or melodramatic in a manner that makes them unreal. Bramwell Fletcher, the young English actor who goes mad at the sight of the Mummy at the beginning of this film, was emptied from the stage. But do you find his reaction to the mummy to be unreal? Don't you think a person could lose his sanity in such a manner? Given the assignment of reacting to such an unbelievable situation, I think Mister Fletcher kharitonov quite well. He later married Diana Barrymore by the way. Have you ever seen this film on the big screen? It has an entirely different effect then on home screen, I assure you. The silent in the back ground of the scene, for example, seems complete except when you hear the mummy begin to breathe and the sound of his bandages have his hands fall from his chest to his sides while Bramwell reads to themself, murmuring the words of the ancient papyrus. It's all quite gripping

I remember as a child watching this scene where Karloff opens his eye, his arm slowly comes down….I remember screaming and covering my eyes. Much more horrifying than any modern version of this story!

Real effects to deliver all the more impact. Insteaad of over-the-top or "jump out at you" like modern movies, this one had subtle hints with extremely minimal animation. All due to the era, and making the film all the more real to watch.

Even more: the archaeologists looks over and apart from 1 hand, the mummy Im-ho-tep is left off-screen. The audience's own imaginations fill-in the black spaces.

If you weren't alive back then, then you can't really say, as you have zero experience of it. Ask a centenarian, they lived it and have lived thru all the changes since then. Starting some years ago, I have been doing an informal survey, asking people at get togethers and family reunions when they thought the best era was. My parents as an example, were both born in the early 1930s, they both said their favorite time was the late 60s thru the 70s. That was the most common answer of the many I asked. One said the 20s, a couple people said the 50s.

The thing people often forget, when we look back at great classics, is that those are simply the works that withstood the test of time. There were lousy movies back then just as there are now. Give it another 80 years and people will probably forget all about Transformers or Twilight or what have you. Instead they'll look at some of our current greatest works and be like "damn, people really knew how to make good movies back then."

Yeah. Like, I love the movies from the 30s more, but the thing is, I would've hated living in the thirties, and by living in this time, I'm able to both watch old movies and a few new ones I enjoy, so it's really the best of both worlds.

The mummy's awakening is so masterfully subtle and atmospheric. You can just see a tiny bright in the mummy's eyes.
This is beyond its time. If it was made today, it would certainly have a sky beam shooting the sarcophagus accompanied by Inception "BWHOMMMMMS"!!! And it would end with a camera jumpscare for sure.

Something really cool about me, I was born on the 73rd anniversary of this movie. It was released on December 22, 1932 and I was born on December 22, 2005. These old movies are amazing, and better than newer horror films which rely on jumpscares and loud music.

Some people think the laughter isn't accurate but sometimes after extreme shock, you can start laughing.

For instance, I used to work security/reception in a mental health unit and one of the patients died of a heart attack. The whole night shift was hectic with managers, paramedics and other people going in and out. I had to let them out and I saw his body being wheeled away under a sheet.
The next morning I let every staff member know what happened so it wouldn't be a shock when they got onto the ward. At some point it got too much and I remember telling this one woman and I wanted to laugh. That wasn't because it was funny, it was horrific but I think I must have been in shock.

This story is almost like Lugosi's "Dracula", in that it deals with the supposed powers of the "undead" over living people. Neither Dracula nor Im-Ho-Tep committed violence against the living, per-se, but their supernatural powers of control was what made them especially fearful. Because of the burgeoning new discipline of "psychiatry" many people were deathly afraid of losing control of their mental faculties or being declared "insane". It wasn't until the Hammer Films remakes that these classic creatures became violent, super-human things. The creepiness that defined post WW1 horror had evolved into the violence and gore that continues to define horror a century later.

Watching this version for the first time the other night. Loved this scene..now that's how you play a horror scene!. Screw special effects and all that jazz you get nowadays..THAT is what you call atmospherically scary!. Boris Karloff played this role amazingly..didn't have to say much..it's that look that mesmerises everyone into submission. Glad to finally see this film and how it inspired the later "Mummy" movies.

My mother and her brother (aged 14 and 12) saw this film one night when it first came out and had to pass through a graveyard to get home! They were freaked out.

I watched this movie I think near the end of last year. And I personally didn’t like this movie as much as Dracula, Frankenstein/Bride and Invisible Man. But this opening scene is definitely the best part of the film. Down to its basic structure it’s what I would consider an excellent scene even against most modern films. It’s also very well acted.

The way there’s 0 music, we are left to watch the Archeologist go about his work after reading the curse. Then we move over to the Mummy slowly waking up. The best part is that we never see the Mummy move in full, only it’s hand and eyes. When the man sees him and goes insane in a laughing fit is the best. He’s just seen something that’s been dead for over 3,000 years get up out of its coffin and walk out the front door. And all we see is a trail of “Mummy Wrapping” (idk what it’s called) move off camera out the door.

@Warren Rhinerson I have to agree with you on giving too much control to Cruise ruined it. Personally I liked the movie, but I think it's because I liked everything other then Cruise so much. It's unfortunate there won't be really a cinematic universe for monsters now. Hopefully if they do more monster movies like the invisible man it will be good.

@dbzgal04 I think it's hated because the director gave Cruise WAY too much control of the film and tried to make it basically mission impossible with a mummy. It wasn't;t a great movie, but it was ok for what it was. It also seems to be kind of a soft reboot rather than a full reboot. The 1999 film was supposed to be a tongue and cheek adventure remake. I do wish they went with a slightly different film with more of a take like the Mummy's Hand.

This is just my opinion, mind you. But I really don't understand why the 2017 "The Mummy" gets so much hate. It isn't a remake. It is its own movie with its own characters, story line, etc. The 1999 "The Mummy," as awesome as it is, isn't even an original in its own right. In fact, it's a remake of this flick!
PS-Here's a little fun fact, the mummy movie with Tom Cruise was originally going to be another sequel in the franchise with Brendan Fraser, with the O'Connell's in Latin America battling an Aztec mummy (whom was going to be portrayed by Antonio Banderas).

I remember when the 2017 version with Tom Cruise was coming out and fans of the '99 version were crying about them having "remade" it...not realizing that that movie is itself a remake as well.

Not sure about the first line, it seems to be in the passive but I can't identify the determinative on the right. Anyway, far as I can tell, it's "Some things are rendered this and that by him." Well, moving on...

This is just my opinion, mind you. But I really don't understand why the mummy flick with Tom Cruise gets so much hate. It isn't an actual remake. It is its own movie with its own (and new) characters, story line, etc.
