Flames
Karl X Johan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't play it on me baby
Don't lay it on me know
Don't play it on me baby
You conquer…on your side
So don't play it on me baby
Don't lay it on me know
You conquer…on your side
And I step on into the flames
Where you hollow
And I step right into the flames
Where you hollow
Yes I step on into the flames
Where you hollow
I step right into the flames
Where you hollow

So don't play it on me baby
Don't lay it on me know
You conquer…on your side
You conquer…on your side

And I step on into the flames
Where you hollow
And I step right into the flames
Where you hollow
Yes I step on into the flames
Where you hollow

I step right into the flames
Where you hollow

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Karl X Johan's "Flames" revolve around the theme of moving on from a toxic relationship. The opening lines "Don't play it on me baby, Don't lay it on me now" suggest that the singer is tired of being blamed for the troubles in the relationship. The repetition of "You conquer...on your side" implies that the other person is unwilling to take responsibility for their own actions and instead tries to shift the blame onto the singer.

The chorus of the song contains the repeated phrase "And I step on into the flames where you hollow" which can be interpreted as the singer facing the negative effects of the relationship head-on, despite the danger it poses. The use of flames as a metaphor for danger and destruction suggests that the relationship is not only toxic, but it is also destructive.

The lyrics are evocative and captivating, backed by an ethereal and atmospheric soundscape. The use of electronic beats alongside a guitar riff gives the song a unique texture. The use of percussion, particularly the use of claps, gives the song a driving beat.

do you remember how you found this track? 💕

@slipfunc

Me and my friend used to link majestic casual songs to each other, I’m pretty sure he showed me this haha. I remember having this one girl in the picture at the time and this song made the days dreamlike back then 🙏❤️

@tropialex

Me too man. Amazing song. Really makes me "feel". Sounds cheesy but I don't know how else to say it lol.

I think part of the aesthetic of this song/video, is that we've all felt this superfluous surge of frenzied excitement/nervousness at the thought and in the preparation of meeting with someone that you like, or think is beautiful.

@1mrunninG

Sometimes I just come back to this video to feel again what it feels to be alive

@chakster

Anyone that appreciates this even more during this social distancing period of our lives?

@Vivi-dq1uv

This video is so underrated, it’s such a masterpiece!
