Witch
Karliene Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We dance to the beat of the flames
And we know all of your names
We corrupt you with our beauty
We castrate you when we′re old and ugly

Oh
We dance with the Devil
Oh
We'll make you tremble
Oh
You best be careful

And you say confess (confess)
To the evidence
You′re a foul heathen
A demon of malevolence
Venomous bitch
Old witch
You're the reason for all our sins

And he cries confess (confess)
Vile succubus
How you beguiled
And defiled my innocence
You're a bitch
You′re a witch
You′re the reason for all my sins

Burn the witch
Burn the witch
Burn the witch
Burn the witch

And you cry confess (confess)
Old sorceress
How you bring the rain and the plague
And my impotence
You're a bitch
You′re a witch
And we cannot suffer you to live

Burn the witch
Burn the witch
Burn the witch
Burn the witch
Burn the witch
Burn the witch
Burn the witch

And you say confess (confess)
To the evidence
You're a foul heathen
A demon of malevolence
Venomous bitch
Old witch
You′re the reason for all our sins

And you say confess (confess)
To the evidence
You're a foul heathen
A demon of malevolence
Venomous bitch
Old witch
You′re the reason for all our sins

Burn the witch
Burn the witch

Burn the witch
Burn the witch

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Karliene's song Witch portray the perspective of those who condemn and demonize women for their alleged involvement in witchcraft. The lyrics are divided into two parts, where the first part is the witches speaking confidently about their power and the second part is the accusers speaking against the witches. The witches in the song embody feminine power and beauty, which they themselves paradoxically use to corrupt others. They claim control over their accusers, making them tremble in fear. The use of fire as a symbol throughout the song emphasizes the notion of powerful women being burned at the stake for their supposed sins, while also providing a sense of chaotic or 'witchy' energy.

The second part of the song is where the accusers attempt to gain control over the witches through a forced confession. They refer to the witches as heathens, demons, and succubus. The accusers use language that perpetuates how the patriarchy has historically branded strong women as 'malevolent bitches' and 'old witches' simply for existing. This leads to the repeated exclamation to "burn the witch" which has been an actual practice in certain parts of history. In essence, the lyrics to Witch brings to light the misogyny and superstition that witchcraft has been associated with, and highlights how women have been oppressed and even killed for embracing their power.

Dearest Karliene, what in the world could have ever possessed you to create something so gorgeously dark and awesome (again)?! The spirits of the witches condemned and those who were innocent called out to you, I believe, in some way. It’s perfect especially for this coming holiday of Samhain (All Hallows Eve). Keep making beautiful things girl

@Karliene

Sally Beth Thanks Sally. It was born from a lifelong obsession with witches and the witch trials in particular. I'm so glad you like it. It was a lot of fun to create 😁

@@Karliene My ancestor Susannah Martin was one of those accused during the Salem Witch Trials. She was executed on my birthday July 19th. From what I read about her we are much the same in many ways. She wasn't a witch in her faith and practice but I am. Although she wasn't burned at the stake many innocent women and men were. Thank you for letting them speak through you.

It's time Hollywood stop putting us witches in a bad light and start showing us for who we truly are. We are keepers of the great mysteries. We are healers, We are the children of the Great Mother Goddess, the hidden Holy Spirit.

@@tarabrooks3760 I've always called witches "the daughters of the moon" idk, it's kinda of a feeling, while male witches are the sons of the sun. Can you tell me if there's anything in your culture which talks about the moon and the sun?

@rae3338

@@igotcheesewannabemypeppero3762 This is incredibly late and I'm not the person you were asking, but a lot of witchcraft involves the sun and the moon. Witchcraft in and of itself is a secular practice but is often used in other religions such as Wicca, and others use it in forming their own path, so really there are many cultures that can be incorporated in witchcraft. But yes, the sun and the moon, especially the moon, are very much incorporated in witchcraft.

@annaschmitz6612

@@tarabrooks3760 There were no people burned at the stake during the Salem Witch Trials. They were either hanged, drowned, or, in one case, pressed to death with heavy stones.

I LOVE the power in this song! It's like a thousands of women have gathered together to taunt the people who are afraid of them for being different! <3
