woman. She's Karyn White.
In the years since her last CD was released in 1994 (Make Him Do Right β Warner Brothers), the lovely, soulful vocalist has focused her energy on family, raising and nurturing her daughter Ashley (her daughter with ex-husband, producer/songwriter Terry Lewis of Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis fame). Whiteβs priorities to family are largely responsible for her absence from the music scene. Her daughter Ashley is now a freshman at Howard University but for the last 18 years β Karyn saw to it that Ashley received the love and care of a mother invested in her child β which the nomadic lifestyle of a professional musician could not afford.
Karyn's considerable talents extend well beyond music. Sheβs been successfully honing her skills in recent years as an interior designer, and making moves in real estate. However, she didn't turn her back on music, still paying close attention to the industry. βMusic is in me. You may be temporarily detached from the business side of it β but the music, the melodies, the rhythms β never leave you,β said White.
White's new CD, scheduled for release in 2012, offers a heartfelt Retro Acoustic soulful flare. She delivers every note, every inflection, with the flow of a woman who knows what each nuance means to the song. The CD contains another anthem for the ladies β a female bonding and
empowerment tune with an acoustic grit, called Sista Sista. With this future classic, the ladies will hear that they have their champion back on the scene. Karyn also performs her own version of the Cyndi Lauper classic, True Colors, on this new CD.
βKaryn is fearless, and when we first started talking about her releasing new music in the marketplace, the first thing she said was β 'I don't want to do it like I've done it beforeβI want it to be new, I want to push the envelope on all of the new social media, internet and website platforms, I want to be the edge not on it........I want to be a difference maker' β βthat's why I call Karyn a renaissance woman,β said Jay King, the independent music, multi-media mogul of Club Nouveau fame, who is working with White on her new music. White's project includes embracing multi-media formats, to broaden the scope of Karyn and her ideas, with her βKaryn's Worldβ website (www.karynsworld.me). Plans for the web site include a reality show, and the opportunity for fans to purchase Karyn White branded merchandise.
Lest we forget, the Los Angeles native who has literally been singing her entire life was nominated twice for Grammy Awards (Best Female R&B Vocal Performance), and earned a trio of Soul Train Award nominations, along with a coveted NAACP Image Award for Best New Artist in 1989. She also added to her musical legacy by co-writing, co-producing and co-executive producing the Billboard HOT 100 Pop Chart #1 single, Romantic, in November 1991. Karyn's monster hits include The Way You Love Me, Secret Rendezvous and Love Saw It, a duet with Babyface. She is an international sensation, with Gold and Platinum albums in Japan, the UK and in Canada.
The songwriting prowess of Karyn White includes her work with industry icons Burt Bacharach and Carol Bayer Sager, as well as her co-writing the hit Til You Come Back To Me in 1992, a popular song originally performed by Rachelle Ferrell. Her first credit in the industry, even prior to hitting as a vocalist, was that of co-writing the Stephanie Mills hit Automatic Passion in 1985, along with the late great industry musician Robert Brookins and lyrical mastermind Tony Haynes. The mid-80's saw White working with a veritable Who's Who of musical talent, from Supertramp and O'Bryan to Richard Marx and Ray Parker Jr.
In 1986, Karyn was featured as a vocalist on a Jeff Lorber album called Facts Of Loveβthat began a buzz that led to her inevitable solo success. So, in 1988, her self-titled debut LP established her as a leading female voice in contemporary R&B music. That album was certified Platinum and reached #1 on the Billboard R&B charts. She enjoyed another Gold album in 1991, with Ritual Of Love. A dream come true is just a tough little wish that would not take NO for an answer. This is a truth for meβ¦. I can't wait to see what God has in store for me this time around!!!! 1994βs critically acclaimed Make Him Do Right may have been the last full length recording by Karyn White β but her voice never left. Expect Karyn to conquer music all over again because true artistry is timeless.

Oh, baby
An appetizin' love recipe
Just like honey to honey bees, oh
I just can't get enough
So fill me up, quench my appetite
I think you know what I have in mind (And you got it)
I'm burnin' with desire
I'm starvin' for your love
Put out my fire
Oh, don't ask what you should do
Be the doctor, baby, I'm in need of a cure
I hunger for your love
I hunger for your love (Just a little bit)
I hunger for your love (Ooh, baby, I hunger)
I hunger for your love (Hunger for your love)
I hunger for your love
Baby, I want ya
Ooh, I hunger
Baby, I want ya
Ooh, I hunger
Ooh
A tantalizin' love fantasy
And when your body is close to me, oh
I end up in a fuss
The heat is on and I start to sweat
I wanna take a bite
But I know you're not mine yet, but, baby, oh, baby, I want you
I crave the way you move (Oh, do it, baby)
If I act too polite I just might lose
My chance at lovin' you
If what I'm thinkin' feels this pleasin'
Then the real thing will keep me screamin' for you
I hunger for your love (Baby, I hunger for love)
I hunger for your love (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, hunger)
I hunger for your love (I hunger for your love)
I hunger for your love
I'm burnin' with desire, baby
Your body heat just drives me crazy, yeah, yeah
{I hunger for your love}
I need your lovin' here tonight
To fill my lovin' appetite, I hunger
{I hunger for your love}
Hunger for your love
I hunger for your love
Hunger for your love
I'm starvin' and I need what's makin' me weak
Like a bee needs honey, baby, I need lovin'
Can I get it, come on
Can I get it, come on
Can I get it from you, baby, come on
Ooh, I want ya, hoo
Uh-huh...uh-huh...uh-huh...
So tell me what you wanna do (Yeah)
Delight me with the pleasures of you
Baby, I want ya
So fill me up with your love real severe
I hunger for your love (Oh, I hunger for you baby, how I want ya)
I hunger for your love (It's so good, I need your love)
I hunger for your love (Oh, baby, I hunger)
I hunger for your love (For your love)
I hunger for your love
I hunger for your love
Baby, I want ya
Ooh, I hunger
Baby, I want ya
Ooh, I hunger
The song 'Hungah' by Karyn White is an R&B classic with lyrics that are sensuous and passionate. The song is essentially about the singer's uncontrollable desire for her lover, which she compares to being hungry. The lyrics use food metaphors to describe her desire; White refers to her lover as a "love recipe" and compares her craving for them to bees' craving for honey. She longs for her lover's attention, and directs them to "fill her up" with their love, and satisfy her hunger, making her feel good. Furthermore, she admits that she's ready for whatever her lover wants to do, she desires their caresses and affection, and she's lost in fantasies.
The lyrics expertly describe White's emotional and physical state as she's longing for her lover. Her voice is soulful and sultry, and the melody is catchy, making for an excellent slow grooving tune. The language is rich with metaphors, making the song cleverly disguised in its expression of desire. Ultimately, 'Hungah' tells a story of White's compulsion and hunger that is rarely seen in love songs, making it stand out as an emotive and passionate ballad of sexual desire.

Why was this not a big hit? It is a real jam! Totally a mid to late 90s classic.

It did peak into the the Top 20 R&B chart, and was a Top 10 dance hit. Pop crossover, not so much.

Maybe not in America but this 1994 album is her best selling one in Japan and South Africa. In fact, she did an arena tour in South Africa in 2022 and has is a brand ambassador for BMW Southern Africa. American audiences were more enamoured with Toni Braxton and Mary J Blige at the time π€·ββοΈ
