Not Pretty Enough
Kasey Chambers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Am I not pretty enough
Is my heart too broken
Do I cry too much
Am I too outspoken

Don't I make you laugh
Should I try it harder
Why do you see right through me

I live, I breathe, I let it rain on me
I sleep, I wake, I try hard not to break
I crave, I love, I've waited long enough
I try as hard as I can

Am I not pretty enough
Is my heart too broken
Do I cry too much
Am I too outspoken

Don't I make you laugh
Should I try it harder
Why do you see right through me

I laugh, I feel, I make believe it's real
I fall, I freeze, I pray down on my knees
I hope, I stand, I take it like a man
I try as hard as I can

Am I not pretty enough
Is my heart too broken
Do I cry too much
Am I too outspoken

Don't I make you laugh
Should I try it harder
Why do you see right through me

Why do you see
Why do you see
Why do you see right through me

Why do you see
Why do you see
Why do you see right through me

Why do you see
Why do you see
Why do you see right through me

Why do you see
Why do you see
Why do you see right through me

Overall Meaning

Kasey Chambers's "Not Pretty Enough" is a heart-wrenching ballad about a woman who feels inadequate and unwanted due to her perceived flaws. The song is a reflection of the common societal pressures that women often face today. "Am I not pretty enough?" is a question that most women have probably asked themselves at some point in their lives. The lyrics are an indication that the character portrayed in the song feels that she is not attractive or desirable enough for the person she loves.

The second stanza shows that the woman thinks she is not good enough for her lover. She questions if her broken heart and outspoken personality are the reasons why she is not good enough. She further questions if she doesn't make him laugh enough, or if she should try harder. The singer also wonders why her partner can see right through her. The refrain "is my heart too broken, do I cry too much, am I too outspoken, don't I make you laugh" shows that she is aware of her flaws and seems to believe that they are the reasons why she is not good enough.

The last stanza is a summary of the struggles that she goes through, trying to be the perfect woman for her partner. She tries hard not to break, loves and craves for her partner's attention, and has waited long enough. The chorus is then repeated, "Am I not pretty enough, Is my heart too broken, Do I cry too much, Am I too outspoken, Don't I make you laugh, Should I try it harder, Why do you see right through me." Overall, the song is an exploration of the challenges that women face in society, and how they try to overcome them.

0:06. The lady is named Jean and the man next to her is Jim. They just happened to be there at the train station in Barstow, CA the day that part of the video was shot.
They've been family friends for 50 plus years. Jean passed away a few weeks ago, and Jim passed just a few days ago. They were very beautiful and special people and will be remembered.
