In March 2009, her self-released debut album, Take to the Sky, reached the Top 20 on the Billboard magazine jazz chart. Way Down Low was released in 2012, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Her third album, The Big Picture, was released on September 30, 2014.
"You see a show like the one Kat Edmonson put on Tuesday night at Scullers, and you wonder what the heck people are doing at Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry concerts. Really, the world is unjust... Edmonson, a petite singer from Austin, Texas, is at once a throwback and a pioneer. Her intimate vocal style and stage presence recall the heyday of jazz
- she has the expressiveness of Billie Holiday, the elegance of Ella Fitzgerald, and the voice of Blossom Dearie. Yet she doesn't merely retread standards. Sure, she likes her Cole Porter, but she and her pianist/arranger, Kevin Lovejoy, molded and modernized chestnuts like "Just One of Those Things," "Night and Day," and "It's All Right With Me" into entirely fresh tunes with new harmonies, inventive rhythm structures, and sometimes mysterious undertones.
Edmonson has grown quite comfortable inside these songs, taking even more liberties with them than she did on her recent CD, Take to the Sky, which stands among the best records of 2009. Like Holiday, Edmonson likes to sing just behind the beat, which infuses her demure voice with drama and heartbreak.
Kat Edmonson is a great jazz singer.
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

But the fire is so delightful
Since we've no place to go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Now it shows no signs of stopping
And I brought some corn for popping
The lights are turned down low
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
How I'll hate going out in that storm
But if you'll really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm
The fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we're still goodbying
But as long as you love me so
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
When we finally say goodnight
How I'll hate going out in that storm
But if you'll really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm
Now the fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we're still goodbyin'
Long as you love me so
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
The lyrics of Kat Edmonson's rendition of "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" beautifully capture the cozy and intimate ambiance of a winter evening spent indoors by a fireplace. The song opens with a juxtaposition of the frightful weather outside against the delightful warmth of the fire indoors, setting the scene for a romantic and peaceful night in. The singer, portrayed as longing for a sense of comfort and security amidst the storm, expresses a desire for the snow to continue falling, emphasizing the safety and coziness of being indoors with a loved one.
As the song progresses, the atmosphere deepens with the mention of corn for popping, low lighting, and the anticipation of a tender moment shared with a partner. The lyrics convey a sense of intimacy and closeness as the singer imagines kissing goodnight and the idea of being held tight for warmth and comfort in the cold weather. The emphasis on physical touch and emotional connection highlights the power of love and companionship in creating a sense of warmth and security, even in the face of external challenges like a snowstorm.
The imagery of the fire slowly dying and the impending goodbye between the singer and their loved one adds a bittersweet tone to the song, underscoring both the transient nature of moments shared together and the enduring power of love. Despite the sadness of parting, the lyrics suggest that as long as there is love between them, the memories of their time together will continue to warm their hearts. The repetition of the refrain "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow" serves as a comforting and reassuring mantra, reinforcing the idea that love and togetherness can provide solace and joy, even in the midst of winter's chill.
In the final verses, the emphasis on saying goodnight and the anticipation of staying warm on the way home further emphasize the theme of love as a source of comfort and protection. The resolution of the song brings the listener back to the image of the dying fire and the bittersweet farewell, yet with a sense of acceptance and gratitude for the love shared. Ultimately, the lyrics of "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" invite us to cherish the moments of connection and warmth that love brings, even in the coldest of seasons, reminding us of the enduring power of love to light up our lives amidst the winter's chill.

3 or 4 years ago I ordered several of Kat's CDs to be shipped to me. Several months later they hadn't arrived. I sent a message asking if anyone could find them using the tracking number, but instead I got a totally sweet message from Kat herself saying she would re-ship the CDs, which she did and which I received. Pretty classy, not to mention unexpected.
