Indigo
Katherine Priddy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You were raised in a forest, it grew straight and tall
As you weave through the trunks, you felt desperately small
The taller you grew, the taller the trees
And you′d run home all muddy and graze both your knees
And there in the middle stood a tall slender beech
If you raised both your arms, you found you could reach
The base of her branches, and upwards you swung
The forest she whispered, as all her leaves sang

To you

In those indigo eyes, there's a child that hides
And the stars they call out to their runaway bride

Oh you

Oh come home now darling, the journey is done
Your troubles are old for a body so young

You are the first and the last, to climb up the tree
You slept in her branches, you whispered that she′d
Been there from the first, she'd be there 'til the end
And you′d weave her your stories of myths and pretend
And there in the night came a mighty great storm
And her arms were outstretched as her body was torn
You cried when you found her and after you fled
But nothing could silence the voice in your head

Oh you

A breath cloud on a window, a shadow on the lawn
Or a leaf on the breeze and a star in the dawn

Oh you

Oh come home now darling, the journey is done
Your troubles are old for a body so young

Oh you

Well, the Earth will forget you, to the stars you are known
And when this life′s over they'll herald you home

Oh

Overall Meaning

Katherine Priddy's "Indigo" is a song about a person's connection with nature and the struggles they face while growing up. The lyrics highlight the memories of a person who grew up in a forest and felt small compared to the tall trees that surrounded them. However, there was a particular beech tree in the middle that would become their sanctuary, where they could reach its base by raising their arms and swing upwards into its branches. The forest would whisper to this person, and all its leaves would sing to them. The lyrics describe the beauty of this connection with nature, reflecting how we can find solace in nature and its offerings.

The chorus tells us that the person has indigo eyes, which indicates their complex nature, and how there is a child in them that is hidden. The stars are calling out to this person, referring to someone who is a runaway bride or feeling lost.

Towards the end of the song, the lyrics bring us to a point where the person's sanctuary, the beech tree, undergoes devastation due to a mighty storm. The beech tree tears apart, leaving the person heartbroken, and the voice in their head continues to echo. Throughout the song, there is a sense of emotional turmoil, but in the end, the lyrics tell us that memories of home will always be with us, and even though we may be forgotten by the Earth, the stars will always know our name.
