Wearing my heart on my sleeve
And I sleep through most days
So the time goes by
And I think I drink more now that ever
'Cause you've got me on your shelf and I just sit here
Thinking about when everything was right
Well I'm tired of you not making up your mind
Sweet little duck I've been dreaming again
But I still wear my heart on my sleeve
I'm gonna set things right
I gotta job down south
Don't you think about coming after me
In Kathleen Edwards's song "Sweet Little Duck," the singer is expressing her longing for a person referred to as "sweet little duck." She admits to wearing her heart on her sleeve and sleeping through most days as time goes by, indicating that she may be struggling with depression or heartbreak. The singer also admits to drinking more, possibly as a coping mechanism.
The chorus indicates that the singer feels stuck in her current situation, as sweet little duck has her "on [their] shelf" and is not making up their mind. The singer longs for the past when "everything was right," suggesting that the relationship with sweet little duck has gone wrong.
In the second verse, the singer continues to dream of sweet little duck but asserts that she will "set things right." She has a job down south and does not want sweet little duck to come after her. This may suggest that the relationship has become toxic or that the singer wants to make a clean break and start fresh.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of longing and frustration, as the singer struggles with their emotions and the state of their relationship with sweet little duck.
