In a Broken Dream
Kathryn Williams Lyrics

(David Bentley)

Every day I spend my time drinking wine, feeling fineâ?¦
Waiting here to find the sign that I can understand, yes, I am.
In the days between the hours, ivory towers,
Bloody flowers push their hands into the airâ?¦
I don't care if I ever know, there I go.
Don't push your love too far.
Your wounds won't leave a scar.
Right now is where you areâ?¦
In a broken dream!

Did someone bow their head?
Did someone break the bread?
Good people are in bed before nine o'clock.

On the pad before my eyes, paper cries, telling lies,
The promises you gave from the grave of a broken heartâ?¦
Hmmmâ?¦

Every day I spend my time drinking wine, feeling fineâ?¦
Waiting here to find the sign that I can understand, yes, I am.
Oooooh!

I sit here in my lonely roomâ?¦

Don't push your love too far.
You know your wounds won't even leave a scar.
Right now is where you areâ?¦
In a broken dream!
And don't forget what I said?

Hoooooo!

Ivory towersâ?¦
Bloody flowers

Overall Meaning

The song "In a Broken Dream" by Kathryn Williams is a cover of the original song written by David Bentley in 1968. The lyrics of the song talk about a person who spends his days drinking wine and waiting for a sign, which he can understand. The lyrics describe how he does not care if he ever knows anything, and he is lost in his own world. The lyrics later mention the idea of not pushing love too far and how wounds do not leave scars. These themes tell the story of an individual who has lost hope in the present and future and is trapped in a broken dream.

The lyrics of the song describe the singer’s feeling of being lost and disconnected from the world. His drinking and waiting for a sign is a means of escape from his misery. The messages of caution about not pushing love too far suggest that he has been hurt in the past and has now retreated into himself.

The repeated phrase "In a broken dream" refers to the sense of hopelessness and disconnection that dominates the song. The imagery of ivory towers and bloody flowers creates a rather eerie atmosphere, adding layers of meaning to the song. The song's overall tone of dejection is conveyed through the mellow melody and the haunting lyrics.

LOVE with this beautiful rendition of Australian David Bentley's '70's masterpiece 'In A Broken Dream'. Listening to Kathryn's version takes me back to the first time I heard Nick Drake's recordings.......I was fortunate to sing backups on the B side of the original Python Lee Jackson recording...'Boogie Woogie Joe'.
