Expectations
Katie Pruitt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some days I can't get outta my own head
"You could start by gettin' outta bed", she said
One day, you know we'll both be dead
So why don't we do some livin'?
Some days I don't know who to trust
In the rain my spirit starts to rust
She said, "You're bein' way too generous
With all the fucks you're givin'"

Wasn't gettin' much out of life at all
Was scared to jump so I was scared to fall
I used to think the world was pretty small
From the comfort of my room
Lately I've been hard to reach
Standin' on this mountain peak
I learned that fear is just the false belief
That there is nothin' you can do

All those years of bad test scores
Still tryna figure out what I was studyin' for
But once you walk out that classroom door
Nobody tells you where you're goin'
It seems like everyone I know
Is just an actor puttin' on a show
I hope one day I'm wise enough to know
There's no way of knowin'

I hate it, so frustratin'
The weight of expectations
Keep bringin' you down
I'm fed up, I won't let
The weight of expectations
Keep bringin' me down
I hate it, so frustratin'
The weight of expectations
Keep bringin' you down
I'm fed up, I won't let

The weight of expectations
Keep bringin' me down

Overall Meaning

Katie Pruitt's "Expectations" is a poignant song that speaks about the struggles of navigating life in a world full of expectations. The song opens with Katie admitting that some days, she can't get out of her own head, which serves as a perfect backdrop to the song's major themes. She speaks about being trapped by the weight of the expectation placed on her, and how it leaves her restless, confused and frustrated. The first verse also shows a conversation between a friend or a companion who reminded her about the transient nature of life, and how it's essential to live every day to the fullest.

The second verse broadens the conversation by talking about the pressures and demands society and the world places on young people. Katie sings about how she was intimidated by the world and scared to explore, learn, or try new things, opting to observe the world from the safety of her room. However, with time and life's experiences, she learned that fear was just a false belief that there was nothing she could do. This truth inspired her to take risks, to jump and to explore life, and with each step, she gained more knowledge and wisdom, realizing that there is more to life than just playing it safe.

Overall, "Expectations" is a beautiful song about the challenges and demands of living up to expectations. The lyrics are masterfully crafted, with real-life experiences and situations that everyone can relate to, making the song truly timeless.

Agreed.

Lyrically I believe she has the potential to speak for an entire generation of misunderstood or outcast and lonely people. I listened through the entire album yesterday and found so much truth, pain but also hope in her music. She'll get the recognition she deserves in time.

I've just heard this for the first time on the radio driving home from work at 4am..
It's gorgeous, four minutes went by so fast.
The guitar sounds magical - it could be Lyndsey Buckingham with Lissie on vocals.

What's not to like?

Rachel Few

I wondered if anyone else heard that in there. Damn good.
