Hometown
Katori Walker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Spent my life in the hood, never seen nothinβ€² different
Everybody told me, "n*gga get the money and the b*tches."
Hit the show and grab a blunt
And let the liquor fill your liver
Preacher promise better days
I'm thinkinβ€², "n*gga how you figure?"

All my family still broke, on welfare
Talkin 'bout heaven better livin', but itβ€²s hell here
Tryna dodge the block and the cops and itβ€²s so rare
And if the enemies is bustin' shots, got β€²em all scared

Tryna find a way up, 'cause I know down
Iβ€²m just tryna be the first to make it from my home town
Got a couple likes and everybody think I'm on now
Finally find a wave and they all lookinβ€² for the boat now (Slow down)

I ain't f*ckin' with you if it wasnβ€²t from the get go
Iβ€²m talkin Montell Jordan, snotty nose and the Crisco
Lately you my dog, [?] actin' like a b*tch though
Down since Nintendo but you betta not switch though

Tryna make it out the hood like condo
Make sure the family good like I know
Finna put my city on like I know
Real [?] didnβ€²t make a lotta con dough

Yeah I'm from the woods
And I done seen low
And I done been po
But now I want mo

Itβ€²s ignorant to think that I don't want a whip
With some rims, 26
And a way to feed my family with a pocket full of chips

I ainβ€²t dumb, I know life is just a gamble
Want the lime light, cuz I'm tired of lightin' candles

{?] watchinβ€² over [?]
Had to scrape from tryna put these kids through college
β€²Cause there ain't no other way
You got me thinkinβ€² about the day
They took my momma's son away
I shoulda f*ckinβ€² blacked out and went a really copped a ca
Let that motha f*cka spray

Have they family all blacked out
Gang signs wacked out
How you wanna act now?
Anybody trippin', you can get it β€²cause I'm strapped now
Spend my life in prison, but at least I laid they ass down

But come to find out that I'm finna be a father
Inside a life is growinβ€² doctor said itβ€²s finna be a daughter
Tryna break the cycle finally take my people farther
Anger turn to motivation got me really workin' harder

Tryna make it out the hood like condo
Make sure the family good like I know
Finna put my city on like I know
Real [?] didnβ€²t make a lotta con dough

Yeah I'm from the woods
And I done seen low

And I done been po
But now I want mo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Katori Walker's song "Hometown" is about his life growing up in the hood and trying to make it out. He describes the struggles and the challenges people in his community face every day, such as poverty, crime, and limited opportunities. However, the singer questions the validity of such beliefs and is skeptical about the prospect of a better future.

The singer expresses his frustration with the difficult circumstances that he and his family face. He questions the preachers who promise a better life but do nothing to help the community. He also talks about the constant fear of violence and the struggle to avoid the attention of the police. Despite the challenges, the singer is determined to succeed and become the first person from his hometown to make it out.

The singer's desire to succeed is fueled by his responsibility to provide for his family. He wants to ensure that his family is not stuck in poverty like his predecessors. He acknowledges that success is not easy, but he is ready to work hard and use his anger as motivation. Overall, the song is about resilience, the power of determination, and the hope for a better future.

Line by Line Meaning

Spent my life in the hood, never seen nothin' different
I have been living in a low-income neighborhood and have never experienced anything other than this lifestyle.

Everybody told me, "n*gga get the money and the b*tches."
People around me have always said that the key to success is acquiring wealth and women.

Hit the show and grab a blunt And let the liquor fill your liver
Going to a party or concert and getting high and drunk is a common occurrence.

Preacher promise better days I'm thinkin', "n*gga how you figure?"
Despite being told by a preacher that things will get better, I am skeptical and don't see how that is possible.

All my family still broke, on welfare Talkin 'bout heaven better livin', but it's hell here Tryna dodge the block and the cops and it's so rare And if the enemies is bustin' shots, got 'em all scared
My family is still struggling financially and relies on government assistance. Despite religious beliefs saying that heaven is a better place, living in this neighborhood feels like hell. We try to avoid the dangerous areas and law enforcement. When someone starts shooting, it creates fear and anxiety for everyone involved.

Tryna find a way up, 'cause I know down I'm just tryna be the first to make it from my home town Got a couple likes and everybody think I'm on now Finally find a wave and they all lookin' for the boat now (Slow down)
I am trying to better my life and succeed because I know what it's like to live in poverty. My goal is to be the first person from my hometown to achieve success. When I started getting attention on social media, people started assuming I made it but they don't realize how much work it takes to achieve that success.

I ain't f*ckin' with you if it wasn't from the get go I'm talkin Montell Jordan, snotty nose and the Crisco Lately you my dog, [?] actin' like a b*tch though Down since Nintendo but you betta not switch though
I won't associate with you unless we've had a close relationship from the beginning. I'm referencing Montell Jordan's song "This Is How We Do It" and childhood memories. If we are friends, don't act disloyal or two-faced, as we've known each other since playing Nintendo as kids.

Tryna make it out the hood like condo Make sure the family good like I know Finna put my city on like I know Real [?] didn't make a lotta con dough Yeah I'm from the woods And I done seen low And I done been po But now I want mo
My goal is to move out of the impoverished neighborhood and make sure my family is taken care of. I plan to put my city on the map and show that successful people can come from low-income areas. I know that it's not easy to make money legally, as many people who have become successful in the past are involved in illegal activities. Even though I have experienced difficult situations growing up, I want more out of life.

It's ignorant to think that I don't want a whip With some rims, 26 And a way to feed my family with a pocket full of chips I ain't dumb, I know life is just a gamble Want the lime light, cuz I'm tired of lightin' candles
It's unfair and unrealistic to assume I don't want a nice car with expensive rims, and to be financially secure enough to provide for my family. I'm aware that life is unpredictable and luck can play a significant role in success. I want to become famous, so I don't feel like I'm constantly struggling and living in the dark.

{?] watchin' over [?] Had to scrape from tryna put these kids through college 'Cause there ain't no other way You got me thinkin' about the day They took my momma's son away I shoulda f*ckin' blacked out and went a really copped a ca Let that motha f*cka spray
I feel like someone is watching over my family and me. We have to work hard to put our kids through college, even if money is tight. Losing my brother made me feel despair and anger, to the point where I almost succumbed to violence.

Have they family all blacked out Gang signs wacked out How you wanna act now? Anybody trippin', you can get it 'cause I'm strapped now Spend my life in prison, but at least I laid they ass down
When someone's family member is killed, they wear all black and display gang signs. People act tough, but if anyone starts trouble, they will be dealt with violently. While I don't want to go to jail, if someone poses a threat, I'm willing to fight back and potentially go to jail.

But come to find out that I'm finna be a father Inside a life is growin' doctor said it's finna be a daughter Tryna break the cycle finally take my people farther Anger turn to motivation got me really workin' harder
I found out that I will become a father, and it's going to be a daughter. I want to be a positive influence on my child and change my family's legacy. Instead of being motivated by anger, I channel that energy into working hard and achieving my goals.
