Alexis Kelley I........ want to say I disagree, but it’s because I usually like unique shows like this or by Sondheim(my favorites) and others equally.

I’ve seen various shows and tours of Broadway shows over here at the Ahmanson Theatre in LA before(in fact, in the fall when I came back to California, I saw the national tour for Dear Evan Hansen, which I also love so much!).

It be nice to experience New York again, but I acknowledge how expensive it was to go the first time(let alone LIVE there).
However, since I have my own ambitions to compose/lyricize/playwright/orchestrate for the musical theatre someday, if I actually decide to work on Broadway, then I’d probably move to a state that’s close to New York that’s not as costly like Pennsylvania, or something.

Then again, I just learned that California is just as costly, if not more than New York, so what would I know for now. :P

I appreciate your sentiment still, and I would love to get the chance to go there again and see a new show there(maybe the new “play with a musical” Soft Power by David Henry Hwang and Jeanine Tesori(which I unfortunately missed when It first premiered here at the Ahmanson Theatre in 2018) when it finally makes it Broadway) someday!

In the meantime, I’m fine with settling for when that new show comes to LA if and when it tours.
Before this pandemic hit, I was SO looking forward to seeing this again at the Dolby theatre on it’s national tour(and maybe when it transfers to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa)!

Ah well, national health comes first, and at least I have the libretto(which I bought at the shows gift shop after The Broadway show), online cast recording, (not to mention some bootlegs scattered somewhere) and memories to comfort me in meantime.
As well as other shows I love just as much! :)

[DINA]
Umm Kulthum and Omar Sharif
Came floating on the jasmine wind
From the west, from the south
Honey in my ears
Spice in my mouth
Dark and thrilling
Strange and sweet
Cleopatra and the handsome thief
And they floated in on a jasmine wind
Umm Kulthum and Omar Sharif
And they floated in on a jasmine wind
Umm Kulthum and Omar Sharif

Friday evening, Omar Sharif
In black and white and blurry through tears
My mother and I would sit there in a trance
He was cool to the marrow, the pharaoh of romance

Sunday morning
Umm Kulthum
Her voice would fill our living room
The ship from Egypt always came
Sailing in on radio waves

And the jasmine wind, deep perfume
Umm Kulthum
And the living room becomes a garden
And the TV set becomes a fountain
And the music flows in the garden
And everything grows

Umm Kulthum and Omar Sharif
Came floating on a lemon leaf
Flying in on a jasmine wind
Umm Kulthum and Omar Sharif
And we dance with them on a jasmine scented wind
Umm Kulthum and Omar Sharif

Omar Sharif was a LEGEND in Latinamerica. He spoke Spanish fluently, so he was always invited to TV shows. I saw him at lease three times on Chilean TV in the 90's... because of that, his films were broadcast all the time. I am a cinephile to the core, and although I am very ignorant in musical theatre, this song captures perfectly the impact of artists on our childhood

I'm Jewish, and I found out about Um Kulthoom after watching this musical. I have no idea what she says, but her music is quite beautiful!

There simply aren't enough good things to say about these performances, but I'm struck by the fact that Katrina Lenk studied as a dancer first, and her ability to interpret every gesture with her entire body -- from her opening posture to her eventual dance -- is remarkable. I especially love how she uses casual, almost dismissive body language at the beginning to kind of 'apologize' for becoming so poetic. Even she resists -- then slowly allows -- herself to get swallowed up by the emotions of it all. This performance should be taught to musical theatre students around the world -- it's an absolute master class.

The camerawork is also exceptional. I'm not used to it being so in-sync with the performance. Usually they just do a couple wide shots to show the stage and then a mid-shot to get the person singing. They really knew when to focus on just her hand, or over to Tony Shalhoub, then pull back. It was superbly captured.

Ok just this performance alone is enough to understand why this musical won 10 Tonys

her face at the end, when the spell over her character breaks and she looks at him like she's realized exactly how much about herself she's just told him, just...UGH i love this
