1. Kayak is a legendary Dutch progressive rock band, mostly known during the 1970’s. Formed from the ashes of the group High Tide Formation (who released only one single before disbanding), the early sound was typified by the contrasting songwriting styles of keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel and drummer Pim Koopman, as well as the distinctive vocals of Max Werner.
The band saw an increasing streamlining of their songwriting, as well as greater commercial fortunes, over the years, hitting their peak of popularity with the smash success of their single “Ruthless queen”, a sizable European hit from their 1979 album, Phantom Of The Night.
Kayak disbanded in 1981, after their semi-conceptual Merlin and subsequent live album Eyewitness. Ton Scherpenzeel subsequently joined progressive rock legends Camel and contributed to their 1984 album Stationary Traveller, as well as to 1999's Rajaz.
Kayak reunited in 2000, releasing one of their best albums yet: Close to the Fire, with a guest appearance of Andrew Latimer of Camel. Being active ever since, Kayak released two further conceptual opuses: Merlin: Bard of the Unseen (an elaboration of their 1981 album) and Nostradamus: The Fate of Man.
In 2007 the band released the live CD KAYAKoustic, to return in 2008 with a new studio album called Coming Up For Air. The coinciding tour celebrated their 35th Anniversary.
Current line up: Ton Scherpenzeel (keyboards) Pim Koopman (drums) Edward Reekers (voc) Cindy Oudshoorn (voc) Joost Vergoossen (guitr) Rob Vunderink (voc, guitr) and Jan van Olffen (bass).
On 23 November 2009, drummer Pim Koopman unexpectedly died of sudden heart faillure...all concerts were cancelled for the remainder of 2009 and for 2010

Evocation
Kayak Lyrics

The night's the singer
The echoes linger
They heal all the words in your mind
All doubtful emotions are dying
Time to awake now
The crowd is sober
The mirror reflecting your thoughts
Was broken with dissonant chords
And the black-plastic culture's aging
Still music's burning
Itself out
Now, looking back over years of trying
There's no conclusion to what I will always mean
Just lean back, listen to my dream
New evocation
The wind's the singer
The echoes linger
They take you to where you belong
The savior from where you went wrong
You're facing the truth now
The crowd is healthy
Their leaders wealthy
Anonymous knowledge we share
It's seen on T.V. everywhere
And the black-plastic culture's aging
Still music's burning
Itself out
Now, looking back over years of trying
There's no conclusion to what I will always mean
You have just listened to my dream
Don't rely on what's never been
The song "Evocation" by Kayak is a poignant reflection on time, growth, and the power of music as a tool for personal and cultural transformation. The lyrics suggest a dualistic framework, dividing time and experience into two distinct phases that are marked by different symbols, emotions, and states of mind. The first phase is represented by the night, doubt, dissonance, and a plastic, aging culture that is slowly losing its vitality. This phase is associated with frustration, confusion, and a sense of aimlessness, as the singer grapples with the murky and unfulfilled longing of their past.
The second phase is marked by a new evocation, with the wind serving as the singer and the echoes lingering to guide the singer towards a more enlightened and awakened state. The crowd is now sober and healthy, with leaders who are wealthy, but more importantly, anonymous knowledge is shared through easy access to information via TV. With a newfound sense of clarity, the singer is better equipped to face the truth of their experience and the world around them, as well as to make sense of the dreams that fuelled their journey towards a better tomorrow.
In many ways, "Evocation" is a song about the power of music to provide solace, inspiration, and a sense of hope amidst the chaos of modern life. It is an ode to the transformative potential of art, as well as a reminder that growth and change are often painful and difficult processes that require deep introspection and a willingness to embrace uncertainty.
