1. Kayak is a legendary Dutch progressive rock band, mostly known during the 1970’s. Formed from the ashes of the group High Tide Formation (who released only one single before disbanding), the early sound was typified by the contrasting songwriting styles of keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel and drummer Pim Koopman, as well as the distinctive vocals of Max Werner.
The band saw an increasing streamlining of their songwriting, as well as greater commercial fortunes, over the years, hitting their peak of popularity with the smash success of their single “Ruthless queen”, a sizable European hit from their 1979 album, Phantom Of The Night.
Kayak disbanded in 1981, after their semi-conceptual Merlin and subsequent live album Eyewitness. Ton Scherpenzeel subsequently joined progressive rock legends Camel and contributed to their 1984 album Stationary Traveller, as well as to 1999's Rajaz.
Kayak reunited in 2000, releasing one of their best albums yet: Close to the Fire, with a guest appearance of Andrew Latimer of Camel. Being active ever since, Kayak released two further conceptual opuses: Merlin: Bard of the Unseen (an elaboration of their 1981 album) and Nostradamus: The Fate of Man.
In 2007 the band released the live CD KAYAKoustic, to return in 2008 with a new studio album called Coming Up For Air. The coinciding tour celebrated their 35th Anniversary.
Current line up: Ton Scherpenzeel (keyboards) Pim Koopman (drums) Edward Reekers (voc) Cindy Oudshoorn (voc) Joost Vergoossen (guitr) Rob Vunderink (voc, guitr) and Jan van Olffen (bass).
On 23 November 2009, drummer Pim Koopman unexpectedly died of sudden heart faillure...all concerts were cancelled for the remainder of 2009 and for 2010

Keep the Change

Somebody here's got feelings too
Or did you think that I
Could easily accept the things you do
I guess you didn't even wonder why
Look at me now, you said
A life like this will drive me mad
You never thought of me, I bet
But I don't care no more, I'm even feeling free
Working my way back to the world, working with might
and mains
So if you'll ever be in need of me, I'll be out of
range
Of all the dreams we built on jealousy
Just an empty shell remains
And though there's still a lot you're owing me
You can keep the change
Wish you were here tonight
I'm lonely and dissatisfied
Your absence really hurts
Feels like I'm about to lose my pride
It's a pain I can't put into words
I'd better stay away
Before your eyes lead me astray
To throw me back again
To where I used to spend my precious days
Not to be alone was all I thought of then
Working my way back to the world, working with might
and mains
So by the time you'll be in need of me, I'll be out of
range
Of all the dreams we built on jealousy
Just an empty shell remains
And though there's still a lot you're owing me
You can keep the change
In Kayak's song "Keep the Change," the lyrics lament the end of a relationship that has left the singer feeling isolated and hurt. The singer begs the other person to consider their feelings, asking if they ever realized that someone else (the singer) was suffering too. The second stanza talks about the singer's freedom from the relationship, but also the pain they are feeling. They are vulnerable and hurt, but they don't want to go back to where they were before when they were so focused on not being alone. The chorus provides the central metaphor of the song, "Working my way back to the world…Of all the dreams we built on jealousy, just an empty shell remains. And though there's still a lot you're owing me, you can keep the change." The lyrics suggest that the relationship was based on envy and jealousy, and that those qualities robbed them of something real and valuable. The singer is bitter about the lost time and energy, but ultimately willing to walk away and move on.
It is possible that the song is addressing a specific relationship, or it could be meant as a commentary on the concept of relationships built on envy and possession in general. The lyrics are open to interpretation, but the theme of feeling trapped and suffocated is a universal one that many listeners could relate to.
Line by Line Meaning
Did it occur to you
Have you even considered
Somebody here's got feelings too
That I have emotions that are affected
Or did you think that I
Did you assume that I
Could easily accept the things you do
Would be okay with the way you treat me
I guess you didn't even wonder why
It seems like you didn't think about my perspective
Look at me now, you said
You used to tell me that
A life like this will drive me mad
Living the way I do would be too difficult
But did you have to leave
But you chose to walk away
You never thought of me, I bet
I suspect you didn't even consider my feelings
But I don't care no more, I'm even feeling free
But now I don't mind, in fact I feel liberated
Working my way back to the world, working with might and mains
I'm doing what it takes to integrate back into society
So if you'll ever be in need of me, I'll be out of range
If you ever require my help, I won't be accessible
Of all the dreams we built on jealousy
All the aspirations we built around negative feelings
Just an empty shell remains
Only a hollow, lifeless structure is left
And though there's still a lot you're owing me
And even though you still owe me a lot
You can keep the change
You can keep what little you have left
Wish you were here tonight
I desire your presence tonight
I'm lonely and dissatisfied
I feel isolated and unhappy
Your absence really hurts
Your lack of presence causes me pain
Feels like I'm about to lose my pride
I feel like I'm losing my dignity
It's a pain I can't put into words
It's an indescribable ache
I'd better stay away
I should probably keep my distance
Before your eyes lead me astray
Before your gaze tempts me back
To throw me back again
To return me to
To where I used to spend my precious days
The place I used to cherish
Not to be alone was all I thought of then
My only concern at that time was avoiding loneliness
