After the release of their compilation album The Best of Keane in 2013, the band took a hiatus, lasting nearly 5 years.
The band returned after the hiatus with new music, announcing their fifth studio album titled Cause and Effect on 6 June 2019 and releasing the lead single from the album "The Way I Feel". A collection of the songs were written by Tim Rice-Oxley during his divorce, and after discussions with Tom who had visited Tim the previous year, decided to proceed with recording the songs for the album. Cause and Effect was released on 20 September 2019. After the release of the album, the band embarked on the Cause and Effect Tour, visiting Europe and Latin America, before the remainder of the tour was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Let It Slide
Keane Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Bitter words are all that remain
Of the dream that had taken you in
But all her words were dust in the wind
It's time to draw the line
To draw the fire
Why'd you never know
The time to move aside
To let it slide
Say, what's that you say?
Time to move on and you're in the way
Lets get to the end and not turn around
She built you up so she could knock you down
It's time to draw the line
To draw the fire
Why'd you never know
The time to let go
The time to move aside
To let it slide
Friend, there's nothing there
You're clinging on to air
You're reaching back
To something that you never had
It's time to draw the line
To draw the fire
Why'd you never know
The time to let go
The time to move aside
To let it slide
To let it slide
Why'd you never know
The time to let go
The time to move aside
To let it slide
The song "Let It Slide" by Keane is about letting go of a past love and moving on. The lyrics describe how bitter words remain from a dream that once felt real, but was only an illusion. The singer urges the listener to draw the line, let go of the past, and move on. The chorus repeats the phrase "It's time to draw the line, to draw the fire" as a call to action to move forward and let go of the past.
The second verse talks about how the listener is in the way of moving on, and how it's important to not look back and get to the end. The line "She built you up so she could knock you down" refers to how the past love may have manipulated and hurt them. The final verse emphasizes that there is nothing left and that clinging onto the past is like clinging onto nothing. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, urging the listener to let it slide and move on.
Overall, "Let It Slide" is a powerful and emotional song that speaks to the universal experience of heartbreak and the struggle to let go of the past.
