To Me
Keaton Simons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She brings me
Promises
She brings me down sometimes
She leaves me
Romances
Disguised, half honest lies
So hard, baby
When you're tryin' not to stick around
So hard, baby
When you're tryin' not to stick around
Too proud to believe you won't
Let me down
Cause you get around
Too proud
To leave you
So I'll stick around
Till you get around
To me
Oh
To me
This is a wishing well
Of my eternity
We have no chance in hell
Just momentary pleas
So hard, baby
When you're tryin' not to stick around
So hard, baby
When you're tryin' not to stick around
Too proud
To believe you
Won't let me down
Cause you get around
Too proud to leave you
So I'll stick around
Till you get around to me
Oh
Seems like wishes never come true
I paid my money too
And as for me and you
We're too cool for clues
Like an unsung blues
I'm too proud to believe you won't let me down
Cause you get around
(You get around)
Too proud to leave you
So I'll stick around

Till you get around
To me

Overall Meaning

Keaton Simons's song To Me is a poignant and emotional ballad about unrequited love and the difficulty of not being able to let go of someone who keeps letting you down. The song opens with the line "She brings me promises, she brings me down sometimes" which perfectly encapsulates the push and pull of this tumultuous relationship. Despite the fact that this person brings him down, the singer cannot help but be drawn to her and her "romances disguised as half honest lies." He admits that it is "so hard, baby, when you're trying not to stick around" but ultimately cannot resist the desire to stay and wait for her to finally notice him.

The chorus of the song is particularly heartbreaking as he talks about being "too proud to believe you won't let me down, cause you get around, too proud to leave you, so I'll stick around, till you get around to me." The repetition of the phrase "too proud" highlights the singer's unwillingness to admit that he is being strung along and his belief that he can somehow change this person's mind. The song ends on a somber note with the lines "seems like wishes never come true, I paid my money too, and as for me and you, we're too cool for clues, like an unsung blues" which further emphasizes the hopelessness of the situation and the realization that this person will never truly be his.
