Watching this for the first time as a child, I was amazed that they didnt use explosives to kill the monster directly like every other monster movie around. The way Val realized it was just an animal and used the graboids own movement style to his advantage was badass.

It's a shame that Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon were never teamed up again in another film. They had great "buddy" chemistry; maybe they could have been a blue-collar version of Sam and Dean Winchester on "Supernatural", traveling around the country fighting evil. An author named Manley Wade Wellman wrote a great series of stories about a guitar-playing army veteran named "Silver John", who does just that. (His guitar has strings of pure silver, which come in handy when fighting many nasty critters). These tales could easily have been adapted for Val and Burt.

I remember one animatronic took years (not too many) to make, hours to get it right and only a few seconds shown on screen. Anticlimactic, eh?

But I do agree that animatronics are so much better when it comes to that.
Jurassic Park being one of the best examples despite its awkward moments like Rexy climbing out from its paddock despite it being a long fall.

Because during the shooting of rexy attacking the car, it was actually malfunctioning cause of the rain and the screams they did were legit. An error made one of the most legendary moments in animatronic films. And the fact that animatronics were much more fun because you get to interact with them rather have a programmer put into it. Sure it takes hours, hell weeks to make, but the payoff becomes huge when you make it work.

@赤ゲキ 🏴‍☠️ that's why to this day animatronics were by far the only things that scare me because they are made to be what they looked. There was a museum that had a show that had a t rex and a triceratops animatronics that would pretend to fight but them run straight to you in the stands and would stop last second before leaving. I was only 8 but I still remember that. 12 years ago the museum removed that show but I still loved it to this day.

Despite the silly concept, it really isn't fair to call this a "bad" movie. There's so much to this film executed very well quality wise, particularly the excellent pacing, perfect balance of humor and suspense, flawless execution of the tense moments and action sequences, well done writing and development of all the characters major and minor alike, and some of the all time best practical effects you'll see in any movie of this variety. It's not so bad it's good, it's just a well made and all around quality film that happens to be in a genre that is almost exclusively used for poorly written schlock like Anaconda, Deep Blue Sea, Piranha, or even it's own extremely inferior sequels.

Holy cow. Almost 30 years ago. My gosh. I remember I rented it for like the 3rd time on VHS and accidentally left it on the payphone. 😂yes. A payphone. I left the VHS tape on the pay phone. My my...how times have changed. I had to pay $60 bucks for that movie...I must have left it and walked away and someone grabbed it one minute after I left ...I returned one minute later and it was gone. People suck. What's makes this movie spacial than any other monster movie is people actually come together and think logically to survive this monster instead of panicking and tripping over & over again..
