Baby It's Cold Outside
Kelly Clarkson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I really can't stay, baby it's cold outside
I've got to go away, baby it's cold outside
This evening has been, been hoping that you'd drop in
So very nice, I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice
My mother will start to worry, beautiful, what's your hurry?
My father will be pacing the floor, listen to the fireplace roar
So really I'd better scurry, beautiful, please don't hurry
Maybe just a half a drink more, put some records on while I pour

The neighbors might think, baby, it's bad out there
Say, what's in this drink? No cabs to be had out there
I wish I knew how, your eyes are like starlight now
To break this spell, I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell
I ought to say no, no, no, mind if I move in closer?
At least I'm gonna say that I tried, what's the sense in hurting my pride?
I really can't stay, baby don't hold out
Ah, but it's cold outside

I simply must go, baby it's cold outside
The answer is no, baby it's cold outside
This welcome has been so nice and warm, baby it's cold outside
Look out the window at the storm
My sister will be suspicious, actually it's no suspicion
My brother will be there at the door, please you need to try to go slow
My maiden that's mind is vicious, oh you're in trouble
Or maybe just a cigarette more

I've got to go home, oh, baby, you'll freeze out there
Say, lend me your coat, It's up to your knees out there
You've really been grand, I'm feeling you touch my hand
But don't you see
How can you do this to me?
There's bound to be talk tomorrow, think of my life long sorrow
At least there will be plenty implied, If you caught pneumonia and died

I really can't stay, get over that hold out
Ah, but it's cold outside

Overall Meaning

The song "Baby It's Cold Outside" is a duet featuring Kelly Clarkson and Ronnie Dunn. In the song, Dunn is trying to convince Clarkson to stay with him in his house because it's cold outside. The lyrics reflect a time when women were not expected to be sexually forward, and men were expected to be persistent in pursuing women. The song has a playful tone, and the lyrics are full of innuendo, with the woman expressing concern about what other people will think if she stays and the man replying with reasons why she should stay. The lyrics are a clever back-and-forth between the two, with each trying to convince the other to stay or go.

The song has a long and interesting history, with various controversies over its lyrics and meaning. It was written by Frank Loesser in 1944 and was first performed by Loesser and his wife at a small party. The song was later featured in the 1949 movie "Neptune's Daughter," and it won the Oscar for Best Original Song. Over the years, it has been covered by many artists, including Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, and Lady Gaga.

A bit more like this:

- "Baby, it's cold outside. I really wanna stay"
- (I know, but my wife's coming home)
- "She won't catch us. I promise."
- (I can't take that chance)
- "Just one more drink?"
- (I would love it, but you gotta leave now)
- "I really don't wanna go"

- GET THE FCK OUT!

They always ask "where's Murray?" But never "How's Murray". If you're cold, he's cold. Let Murray in.

HAHAHAHAH! Amazing comment! :P :D

@sofieanderson622

Ugg, he rewrote it to make it look like he wasn’t forcing her to stay but the original song was written by a MARRIED COUPLE that sang it to their family every Christmas. It was an innocent song about a guy not wanting his date to leave because he really liked her and they were both flirting with each other. He wasn’t holding her hostage or anythingđŸ€Šâ€â™€ïž get it straight John🙄
