Heroin
Kendrick Lamar feat. Ab-Soul Isaiah Rashad Jay Rock & SZA Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was I witnessing poverty
Burning bullets allowing these walls breaking
Devour these laws trying to empower me
I thought I knew the reason you grew to love sour deez
Smoking like locomotive your focus was hourly
And then you caught me your pity party [?] me
Shower me with the will that never dried
I tell you put your worries and friendly doubts to the side
I doubt that you listen, it's stuck in your system I tried
She's been miserable, she's been living in prison
Soaking up life's reality this is the visual
Baby daddy a light build blade walking with high heel
Paid stalking that avenue, never knew how the light feel, I
Got a plane got a plan for ya
I just just might hold a couple bands for ya
And leave this message in the sand for ya
Tell me you're ready to change
She said naw nigga it's part of the game
Just like Heroin

Streets don't fail me now need you right on time
Say, right on time
Please stay paced and the ground need you right on time
Say, you right on time
Streets don't fail me now need you right on time
Say, you right on time
God please lift the smile need you right on time
Say, right on time

Runaway from the fire, I fly down hill
Lay your head over this side, now
You keep pain on the inside, now
Whats been eating you, who's been needing you
You been keeping it down, and
You been taking me higher and higher

Uh, functioning addict, I'm high off her passion
Chasing history's baddest, I mastered this apparatus
Rackin' my brain, I'm scared of being average
Going against the grain just tryna maintain my savage
Foolish of her to try to play towards my vanity
And foolish of me to let her do it, I love calamity
I love a challenge, naw I love the fantasy
And this is high stakes I risk it all for a pair of snakes
Connect the dot nigga this is fate
I'm talking predestination
I'm talking blind dedication
Plan B is contraception we didn't make it
Sexercise a little bit of patience
The love of the rush is us
I'm addicted to violence, helicopters and sirens
Blood pressure is skying, nigga I'm trying
I never felt more alive than I felt dying
Heroin

Streets don't fail me now need you right on time
Say, right on time
Please stay paced and the ground need you right on time
Say, you right on time
Streets don't fail me now need you right on time
Say, you right on time
God please lift the smile need you right on time
Say, right on time

I heard you spending all your time baby (Oh)
And you could never get a dime baby (Never get a dime)
At least a nigga got a dime baby (At least a nigga)
It's hard to come home (Hard to come home)
It's hard to come home (Hard to come home baby)

She my gift and my curse, she really quenching my thirst
Baby my vice, she got me driving with no headlights (Is that right?)
She know my thoughts, pleasures and pain
Everybody love her and she love everybody the same
She said I got a plan, got a plan for ya
I might hold a couple bands for ya
Leave a message in the sand for ya

Tell me you want me to change, hell naw I'm still sippin' the same
Nigga it's just like heroin

Overall Meaning

The second verse is focused on functioning addiction, in which the singer is addicted to the rush of violence and risk-taking, with drugs being the key to that feeling. The song ends with the line "nigga it's just like heroin," emphasizing the power of addiction and the similarities between drug addiction and other forms of addiction.

The industry said TDE failed, but real listeners say different. Soul is well known in the industry and he admitted that he didn't push for major labels himself. He knew his lane and his gradual rise to where he is now, soul is solidified. Also, These Days.... came out in 2014. Soul didn't need the radio, he's good. He may want too now but he's got to a point where he's solidified

Louaista

Exactly bro 💯 I mean even being as underground as he is - he still accomplished more than 99% of artists all around the world who are trying to make it in the industry, simply for being signed to TDE. He's always been my favorite artist from the label (other than Kendrick 😅)

Thanks for watching!

whotfisdavinci

You guys are right but soulo literally been talkin bout his frustrations on him not getting any mainstream buzz for a while now.

whotfisdavinci

These days was also full of songs that sounded like it was trying to appeal to a broader audience

Izaiah Joseph

@Louaista you gotta remember he’s mainly TDE. He never was involved with interscope and he was fine with that.

Live Life

You gotta love these psycho people that create bullshit like this just to live in their own universe.

Ab soul is a salty rapper unhappy he didn't pop like everyone else in his group. Like most people in the world, Ab Soul was my fav out of Jay Rock , Kendrick and School Boy Q, the kid has bars but not the flow, cadence or charm of the others

Ab-Soul is GOATED in my circle 🙏🏾

I agree he definitely should have a bigger shine. The reason for that not happening lies both in Soul & TDE.

Nonetheless, the albums & mixtapes are still out there & regardless of (poor) marketing, they exist! In their pure form.

So really, it’s about reach (which is a big thing). But his music is still GOATED.

Earl... lol
