Mountain of Love
Kenny Lynch Lyrics

Standin' on a mountain lookin' down on a city
The way I feel is a doggone pity
Teardrops fallin' down the mountainside
Many times I've been here, many times I've cried
We used to be so happy when we were in love
High on a mountain of love

Night after night I'm a-standin' here alone
Weepin' out my heart till the cold grey dawn
Prayin' that you're lonely and you'll come here too
Hopin' just by chance that I'll get a glimpse of you
(Oh yeah!)
Trying hard to find you somewhere up above
High on a mountain of love

The mountain of love, the mountain of love
You should be ashamed
You used to be a mountain of love
But you just changed your name

Way down below there's a half a million people
Somewhere there's a church with a big tall steeple
Inside the church, there's an altar filled with flowers
Wedding bells are ringin' and they should've been ours
That's why I'm so handy, my dream is gone above
High on a mountain of love

(Keep playin' it like it is!)

That's why I'm so lonely, my dream is gone above
High on a mountain of love
High on a mountain of love

High on a mountain of love
High on a mountain of love

Overall Meaning

Kenny Lynch's "Mountain of Love" is a song about lost love and the pain of separation. The lyrics explore the emotions of a man standing on a mountain, looking down on a city and weeping for the love that he has lost. The first verse paints a picture of a man's heartbreak as he looks down on a city that reminds him of his lost love. The lyrics describe his tears falling down the mountainside, and how many times he has cried in the same place. The man remembers the good old days when he was happy with his lover and they were on top of the world, but now he is alone with only the memories of their love.

The second verse shows the man's obsession with his lost love. He stands on the mountain night after night, weeping his heart out, praying that his lover is also lonely and will come to the mountain. He hopes to get a glimpse of her but knows that it is unlikely. The man tries to find solace in the thought that his love is somewhere up above, high on a mountain of love. The chorus is the same as the intro, emphasizing the man's despair and hopelessness.

The lyrics make use of imagery, showing the man standing on a mountain and the city and church in the distance. The use of repetition and metaphor intensify the emotions conveyed. The song, which was originally recorded by Harold Dorman in 1960, has become a classic and was even covered by the Beach Boys in 1965.
