Old Folks
Kenny Rogers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody knows him as old folks
Like the seasons he comes and he goes
Just as free as a bird and as good as it were
That's why we all love them so.

Always leaving his spoon in his coffee
Tucks his napkin up under his chin
And that old corn cob pipe
Well, It's so mellow it's right
But still you're not ashamed of him.

Every Friday he goes fishing
Sown by the lake
But he only caught a perch or two, a whale got away
Guess, I'd better warm a steak.

Someday there's gonna be no more old folks
What a lonesome old town this would be
Children's voices are played

We'll be still for a day
The day they take old folks away...

Overall Meaning

The song "Old Folks" by Kenny Rogers is a poignant reminder of the special place old people have in our lives. It is a song that celebrates the quiet dignity of old age, and the way that even though old people might slow down and need a little more care, they remain just as vital and valuable to us as ever.

The first two lines introduce the titular character: everybody knows him as old folks. He's like the seasons, coming and going, but always an important presence in the lives of those around him. Despite his age and any limitations he might face, old folks are free-spirited and beloved by all. The next few lines describe some of his quirks - he always leaves his spoon in his coffee, tucks his napkin up under his chin, and smokes an old corn cob pipe. But even if there are some idiosyncrasies, nobody is ashamed of him.

The second verse continues to paint a picture of old folks - every Friday he goes fishing, and even though he might only catch a perch or two, it's an important ritual for him. The singer notes that they might need to warm up a steak soon, indicating the old man might not be as successful in his fishing expeditions as he once was. The final verse is the most poignant: someday, there will be no more old folks. This will be a lonesome old town indeed, as the children's voices are stilled for a day. It's a reminder that old people have a special kind of value in our lives, and that we should never take them for granted.

Is there an original version of this song? I listened to it religiously as a preteen kid just as much as Kenny Rogers big hits on the radio.

He Changed some lyrics, about fishing, it suppose to be nobody knows he fought for the blue or grey, maybe he was avoiding controversy, but the original is beautiful. Thanks Kenny

The Great Dominion

Mostly updating it I imagine. In 1938 when the song was written there were still a few veterans of the American Civil War living and many in living memory. Not so much by 1979.
