The band formed in 1967 with Mike Settle and Thelma Camacho completing the lineup.

The First Edition signed with Reprise Records and recorded the pop-psychedelic single "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)", a song later to feature in the Cohen Brothers film "The Big Lebowski". Within a year, the group was billed as "Kenny Rogers and the First Edition" and in the summer of 1969, they once again hit the charts with "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" (US #6, UK #1).

For the next two years, the First Edition bounced between country, pop and mild psychedelia, enjoying world-wide success.

I guess that for once I get to be the first to comment. Who would not love this song and good old Kenny Rogers. To tell you the truth I've always been partial to any singer named Kenny, ha, ha. The emotion is always the same whenever I hear his voice! Do you realize that he almost dethroned Elvis in my heart!!! Oui mais on n’a plus le contraste entre la voix désespérée et rocailleuse de Joe déjà usé par les excès...qui crédibilise ce You are so beautiful to me...Kenny Rogers a une trop belle voix et est trop beau ...j’y crois moins qu’elle est trop belle pour lui...manque le désespoir pour moi...il n’y croit pas à ce qu’il chante...il sait qu’il peut l’avoir...enfin c’est ma sensation en écoutant cette version que je ne connaissais pas.
