Rainbow Connection
Kermit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide

So we've been told, and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it
Look what it's done so far

What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

All of us under its spell
We know that it's probably magic
Have you been half asleep, and have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same

I've heard it too many times to ignore it
It's something that I'm supposed to be

Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

Overall Meaning

"The Rainbow Connection" is a poignant, sentimental song from the 1979 film, The Muppet Movie, originally performed by Kermit the Frog. The song asks why we often ponder, sing, and write about rainbows and wonders what is on the other side of them. It claims that rainbows are only illusions, and merely visions that have nothing to hide. People have been told that rainbows are only visions, and some choose to believe it, but the singer says they're wrong and that someday we'll find the rainbow connection.

The song suggests that finding the rainbow connection would be an incredible accomplishment and would make for a lovely time. Kermit believes that everyone who listens to the call of the lovers will someday meet this rainbow connection, an implicit point about how this connection is more than just about rainbows. "Every wish will be heard and answered" is another statement in the song, showing that everyone has a chance to succeed. The lyrics explain how amazing and mesmerizing the rainbow is, calling on the lovers and dreamers to join him in finding the rainbow connection. For decades, this classic song has been beloved by many, inspiring children's movie soundtracks for years to come.
