Fowler put together a country band in 1998 and began playing Tuesday nights at Babe's on Sixth Street in Austin. Within two years, he'd begun recording albums and struck big with his self-released Beer, Bait and Ammo (2000). The album sold around 30,000 copies in the Texas area and garnered an impressive amount of airplay, particularly for the album's title track. The song became somewhat of a Texas anthem; Mark Chesnutt made the song part of his live show, and Sammy Kershaw recorded it. Fowler returned in 2002 with his third album, High on the Hog, and boasted some impressive guests, including Willie Nelson and David Lee Garza.

The band was playin' 'Girl from Ipanema'
It was like a bad dream, y'all
Had a plate with a cracker and a piece of cheese
The waiter came by said, 'You tried the Clams Casino
I said, 'Who me' No'
I'd been dyin' to hear
'What do you say, you and me go find ourselves a beer'
And I said
Now, you're talkin' like I'm thinkin
You're readin' my mind that's what I'm sayin'
I heard that, don't hold back
Now you're talkin', hey, hey
Now you're talkin', that's more like it
You're readin' my mind, baby you're psychic
I heard that, don't hold back
Now you're talkin', hey, hey, hey
Now you're talkin'
It was a regular down home country dive
The band was playin' 'Sweet Home Alabama'
The whole place was jammin'
We got a pitcher of beer, some wings and fries
The bar tender said, 'Have you tried our chips and salsa
And I said, 'No, but maybe we oughta'
Looked at your watch and you looked at me
Like, baby, it's time to go
If we leave right now we won't get no sleep
Might as well stay till they close and I said
Now you're talkin' like I'm thinkin'
You're readin' my mind that's what I'm sayin'
I heard that, don't hold back
Now you're talkin', hey, hey
Now you're talkin', that's more like it
You're readin' my mind, baby you're psychic
I heard that, don't hold back
Now you're talkin', hey, hey, hey
Now you're talkin'
That's more like it
We're on the same page
You're speakin' my language
Whatever you say
Now you're talkin' like I'm thinkin'
You're readin' my mind that's what I'm sayin'
I heard that, don't hold back
Now you're talkin', hey, hey
Now you're talkin', that's more like it
You're readin' my mind, baby you're psychic
I heard that, don't hold back
Now you're talkin', hey, hey, hey
Now you're talkin' like I'm thinkin'
You're readin' my mind that's what I'm sayin'
Now you're talkin' like I'm thinkin'
You're readin' my mind, girl that's what I'm sayin'
Now you're talkin'
The song starts by describing a typical black tie country club scene with the band playing 'Girl from Ipanema.' The singer seems to be feeling out of place at the event until a woman whispers something to him that he has been dying to hear. She suggests they go find themselves a beer, and the singer says, 'Now you're talkin' like I'm thinkin', you're readin' my mind that's what I'm sayin', I heard that, don't hold back, now you're talkin', hey, hey'.
The song then transitions to a regular down home country dive where the band is playing 'Sweet Home Alabama.' The singer and the woman get a pitcher of beer, wings, and fries, and the bartender suggests they try their chips and salsa. The singer recalls how the woman looked at her watch and then at him, suggesting it's time to go, but then asks him to stay until the place closes. The singer again exclaims, 'Now you're talkin' like I'm thinkin', you're readin' my mind that's what I'm sayin', I heard that, don't hold back, now you're talkin', hey, hey.'
The song seems to be about two people who feel like they're on the same page, reading each other's minds and understanding each other well. They enjoy each other's company and conversation, and this connection is reflected in the catchy chorus of 'Now you're talkin', hey, hey.'
