Kevin Gates first began rapping in 2007, when he began making music with fellow Louisiana natives such as Webbie and Lil Boosie. Gates first received attention with his 2008 single "Get in the Way" featuring Lil Boosie. Soon after, he and Boosie would be incarcerated in separate cases. Gates would then be released in 2011 and immediately returned to recording music. He would soon earn the attention of Lil' Wayne. In early 2013, Gates released a mixtape, The Luca Brasi Story which was called "easily the best rap-related thing" in February 2013 by Spin Magazine. The Luca Brasi Story has been downloaded from popular mixtape sharing site, DatPiff, over 130,000 times.
On February 15, 2013, it was announced that Kevin Gates signed to Atlantic Records. Gates was also featured on Pusha T's 2013 mixtape as well as on Gudda Gudda's mixtape. On July 16, 2013 Gates released a street album titled Stranger Than Fiction, the street album was supported by the single "4:30".
He released his latest project By Any Means in 2014, and from there exploded in even more popularity. Mid-year made his way onto the cover of the 2014 XXL Freshman list.

Only when my whole team is winnin'
I been goin' on for a minute
Talk slick when they see me start grinnin'
I'm tellin' y'all
Get off my ih
I'm tellin' y'all
Get off my ih
When [?] hit my line, I'm 'bout to glide to California
Compton Menace'll come scoop me from the airport if I wanna
[?] fishin' for plugs, we coulda died in California
I don't give a fuck, I want my daughter to witness
Get a man who like your father, no lil' boy who never lived it
Pouring syrup in the drink, the pressure [?]
[?]
Wanna see you win, get it straight
Lot of 'em probably say I don't love 'em, I don't spend enough time with 'em
Stickin' to what's left of the G-code is where you find [?]
[?] dead in the hospital, his mama in the hospital with him
[?] in the same hospital, I was in the bed with [?]
My phone rang by the hour, [?] called, why she cryin'?
[?]
Thankin' Jesus for the heater
When he hopped out y'all ran from him
[?] on a late night [?]
Feel like I been on for a minute
Only when my whole team is winnin'
I been goin' on for a minute
Talk slick when they see me start grinnin'
I'm tellin' y'all
Get off my ih
I'm tellin' y'all
Get off my ih
Late night I think 'bout where we post to be
Where we go from here
I don't fuck with pussy niggas, only fuck with real
I even love some pussies, always had me in some shit
Fist fighting for 'em and jumpin' out with [?]
[?] shot at my feet, [?] knocked out my teeth
We scuffled, he say he loved me, "I love you too, keep it street"
[?] my uncle, then he copped a plea
Told 'em I had snuck him 'fore I hop in the street
Rest in peace [?}, I'm like "Why you had to leave?"
Somebody played then they dead, man that's how it had to be
I'm tellin' Draco "go suit up, you clutchin', I'm clutchin'"
I was goin' [?], you know how I be comin'
Behind [?] grippin' a biscuit, walk you down all in public
My daughter died, I make the streets cry, Berto I love you
J Real you my brother, let's go harder for nothin'
Only reason the beef [?] 'cause you told me "I love ya"
Feel like I been on for a minute
Only when my whole team is winnin'
I been goin' on for a minute
Talk slick when they see me start grinnin'
I'm tellin' y'all
Get off my ih
I'm tellin' y'all
Get off my ih
In Kevin Gates's song GOMD, the rapper talks about his rise to fame and how he has been in the game for a minute. He expresses that he only feels like he's winning when his entire team is winning too. When he smiles, people start talking behind his back, and he wants them off his back. He talks about going to California and wanting his daughter to see him succeed with the right kind of man in her life - someone who is like her father. He talks about sticking to the G-code and not spending enough time with some people who might criticize him. He also mentions an incident in a hospital where his friend and his uncle were admitted, and he was there to see them. Finally, he talks about his love for his brother and how they need to go harder for no reason, and the beef is only because they love each other.
The lyrics to GOMD provide insight into Kevin Gates's perspective on his life and fame. Despite his success, he remains true to his roots and expresses a desire to remain loyal to those who supported him along the way. He also acknowledges the negativity that comes with fame and wants to keep a distance from it.

I'll say again, this man masters what rap music really is. Flow, lyrcisim, & punctured punchlines. Gates is the best rapper hands down. Could care less what others think, true gangsta with metaphors & stories. #FreeGates #RealistNigga #BWA #Respect
