I Can Lie
Kevin S Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

According to Plato, music is moral law
It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind
Flight to imagination, charm to sadness
And life to everything around
Then I want my money back
Cause my wings don't work
And I'm still sad
So I put my words down on this empty page
Waiting for my chance to fly
It seems that my feet just stay on the ground
If you see Plato ask him why
Then I want my money back
Cause my wings don't work
And I'm still sad
Look deep inside myself
I see my wings were tied
Untie myself by writing the words down from my mind
Then I can fly

I can fly
I can fly

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics, Kevin S reflects on the concept of music as discussed by Plato. Plato believed that music had a moral force, bringing beauty and inspiration to the universe. It could uplift the mind, ignite imagination, bring solace to sadness, and give life to everything around. However, Kevin S expresses disappointment with this idea, suggesting that these transformative effects of music have not been realized in his own life.

The repeated refrain of wanting his money back suggests a metaphorical transaction where Kevin S feels he has paid for something (perhaps music or the power it is supposed to possess) but has not received what he expected. He feels that his wings, symbolizing the ability to soar and achieve greatness, do not work. Additionally, he states that he is still sad, indicating that music has not provided him with the emotional healing he had hoped for.

To cope with these feelings, Kevin S turns to writing. By putting his words down on an empty page, he acknowledges that he is waiting for his chance to fly, suggesting that writing and creating can be his way of finding release and fulfillment. However, he laments that despite his efforts, he still feels grounded, unable to truly take flight.

In a moment of introspection, Kevin S realizes that the reason his wings don't work is that they have been tied. This can be interpreted metaphorically as limitations or insecurities holding him back from achieving his full potential. By writing the words down from his mind, he is untying himself, freeing his thoughts and allowing himself to soar. In doing so, he discovers the power to fly, signifying his newfound ability to break free from his constraints and pursue his dreams. The repetition of "I can fly" emphasizes his growing confidence and belief in his own abilities.

Overall, these lyrics explore the dichotomy between the idealized transformative power of music and the disappointment and sadness experienced by Kevin S in his personal journey. Through the act of writing, he finds solace and liberation, symbolized by the ability to take flight and achieve his dreams.

It's difficult to top Kevin's horse story. Brian Cox crying laughing, Rob interjecting with "Kevin, for the love of God"...and David being so completely unsure he admits "The trouble with this game, is it plays tricks with your mind." Even with all of Lee's hilarious moments, the horse bit is tough to beat.
