In New York, Salem caught the ear of fellow songwriter Freedy Johnston, who got Salem to record and perform with his band for four years.
Salem's debut solo album, Soma City, won positive responses upon its release in 1994.
Later, while working with Giant Sand and Chocolate Genius by day, Salem and his band patiently constructed the beginnings of what would become 2001's Ecstatic.
