Her 1995 self-titled debut album provided her first country hit, "Just My Luck", as well as the follow-up "Those Words We Said". Her follow-up album, 1996's Bitter Sweet featured a more pop-oriented sound.
She has also had significant success as a songwriter for others. She collaborated with Radney Foster on "Nobody Wins" and co-wrote Trisha Yearwood's hit "Believe Me Baby (I Lied)" (Yearwood also covered Richey's "Those Words We Said"). Maura O'Connell and Brooks & Dunn covered her song "Every River". Patty Loveless, Mindy McCready, The Greencards, Terri Clark, Cyndi Thomson, and other country artists have recorded covers of her songs.
Richey provided backing vocals on "Come Pick Me Up" on the 2000 debut album Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams.
In 2004 her track, "A Place Called Home", was featured in episode 16 of season 5, "Shells", of the Angel television series. The song later appeared on the Angel soundtrack, Live Fast Die Never.
On 7 July 2007, she performed in Washington at Live Earth.
Her album, "Edgeland," was released in 2018.
In 2020 she released A Long Way Back: The Songs of Glimmer, based on new versions of the 14 songs on her 1999 album Glimmer, in a more acoustic style. Reviewing the album for the Seattle PI, Jon Sobel says "Richey's mapley voice, always unmistakeable, has developed a sheen of gravitas it didn't possess in 1999. Just as important, the songs hold up. The slighter ones ("So It Goes," "Good at Secrets," "Gravity") carry more weight in their new, more airy settings, thanks partly to Doug Lancio's artful and sensitive production. The strongest ("Didn't I," "Can't Lose Them All," the sublime "Come Around") feel cooler, or more studied, and somehow at the same time hotter, the emotions more precisely sketched."

Fallin'
Kim Richey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Uptown and braver
I'm moving straight through yesterday
Full on and higher now
I'm wading through the doubt
Opened up, I'm turning every page
CHORUS:
And I went outside and I
And I saw a star fall down
And I thought as it blazed across the night
I remember fallin'
I remember fallin'
Best friend and lover
Felt like forever
Every fiber, every day
Nobody quite like you
Never a voice so true
Too bright to ever fade away
REPEAT CHORUS
The story's over and I've lived through the ending
But that doesn't mean I wouldn't
Do it all again
I remember fallin'
I remember fallin'
I remember fallin'
I remember
The song "Fallin'" by Kim Richey is an emotional track that encourages listeners to let go of the past and move forward. The artist describes how she is feeling strong, braver, and full of energy. She emphasizes that she does not want to be held back by her past, but rather wants to keep moving forward. The first verse of the song sets the tone for the rest of the song as the artist sings about how she is moving past her doubts and fears. She is confident and ready to take on anything that comes her way.
In the chorus, the artist takes herself outside and looks up at the late night sky. She sees a star fall down and remembers how she has fallen before. The falling represents her past mistakes and the lessons she has learned from them. However, instead of dwelling on the past, the artist chooses to focus on the present and the future. She remembers falling but is determined to keep moving forward.
The second verse of the song reveals that the artist has recently lost someone close to her. She sings about how her best friend and lover felt like forever and how she will never forget them. Her words convey the depth of her love and the grief she feels at their absence. Despite this, she still chooses to move forward and remember the good times they shared.
Overall, "Fallin'" is a powerful song about moving on from the past, learning from mistakes, and remembering those we have lost along the way. It is a reminder to focus on the present and the opportunities that lie ahead.
